Leonard Fournette has his fifth-year option picked up

This time last year, a few local media members and I were talking about this very topic. The Jaguars would announce on the afternoon of the first round of the NFL Draft they had picked up Jalen Ramsey’s fifth-option in 2020.

Would the team do the same thing for Leonard Fournette? At the time, we all agreed it would not happen given the circumstances of the former first-round pick’s season and how he and the front office did not see eye-to-eye. Now, it could be the team either will pick up his option or offers him a contract extension.

Fournette has earned the right to play in Jacksonville through the 2021 season.

Fournette led the team in rushing in 1,152 yards and with 76 receptions. He became a more complete back this past season and a leader on the field and in the locker room. He should be even better in 2020 if the offensive line improves and the Jaguars can stick with one quarterback the entire season.

Fournette told the media prior to the season he wanted to prove he could be the workhorse the team envisioned him to be when they drafted him. I think he did just that. Keeping the former LSU star in Jacksonville two more seasons is a good thing. Locking him up to a new deal for the future is ideal.
