Did winning last week cost the Jaguars in the NFL Draft?
By David Levin
Did the win on Sunday in Miami hurt the Jacksonville Jaguars chances of selecting a quarterback in the first round of the NFL Draft?
There are some fans out there who will tell you they were upset the Jacksonville Jaguars won last week in Miami. beating the Dolphins and knocking their in-state rivals out of the AFC playoffs might have been exciting, but by winning, the team hurt its draft position, which could mean the team misses out on one of the top quarterback prospects in April.
I’m not one who believes in “tanking” to gain potential and I certainly do not think the group of quarterbacks who will be drafted will be close to the signal callers last year. There are too many question marks in my mind.
The overvalue of the position and the need for teams to make the right moves in the first round because the NFL has become a passing league makes the Jaguars choice of their next leader under center that much more critical.

Of the eight teams that pick in front of Jacksonville at this moment, there are possibly three teams that “need” a quarterback for the future. With Justin Herbert of Oregon and Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins weighing their options, it could still be a very poor quarterback draft, with a handful of players who will be selected much higher than they should be.
Quarterback is this team’s biggest need, but the offensive line must also be addressed. A play-making wide receiver to compliment Dede Westbrook and Marqise Lee would help as well. Tight end might also be a position of concern. And let’s not forget if Tom Coughlin is still making the decisions on Draft Day, there is always a chance a pass rusher could slip to him in the top 10.
Taven Bryan is not the answer right now on the outside as a pass rusher but has shown to be an improving interior defensive lineman. The recent play of Lamar Jackson in Baltimore makes the Bryan selection that much more curious. Add to it that Will Hernandez, a guard taken in the second round by the Giants was available and fans and media alike question why either one is not wearing black and teal.
Drew Lock, Ryan Lindley, and Will Greer are all quarterbacks with a second-round grade right now but will get plenty of attention if Herbert and Haskins stay in school. They will also be asked, by whichever team drafts them, to start their careers faster than expected, which could lead to disaster.
I don’t expect the Jaguars to win on Sunday at Houston, but if they by chance upset the Texans, then they would select somewhere around 11th in April, further complicating their need to address the quarterback position. Unless Coughlin and the front office decide to move up in the first round – which was done when the team selected Blaine Gabbert in 2011 – Jacksonville could be on the outside looking in.
The worst thing that could happen for this franchise is they miss out on the next J.J. Watt-type player (the Texans grabbed him at 11 ahead of Gabbert) thinking the quarterback they grab is better than he truly is.
