3) Dan Skuta, linebacker, Jacksonville Jaguars

Dan Skuta was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars to come in and fill the “OTTO” linebacker position for the team. It’s a diverse role with a lot of responsibility and Skuta has seemed to be a perfect fit.

That said, I’ve mostly been quiet about Skuta and his impression on the team so far. He’s being treated almost like a Swiss army knife and in my mind that doesn’t bode well, no matter how athletic he is.

But on Friday, Skuta really impressed me.

While three tackles, one for a loss, doesn’t exactly scream impressive, what Skuta showed on Friday was that he can be a reliable linebacker in his role. He’s someone the Jaguars can call upon and he’ll answer that call again and again.

He’s working all over the defense both on the line and off it and I think that it could actually work. I’ll admit I was a doubter, but I finally came around to liking Skuta this weekend. I want to see it translate statistically and consistently through the season, but I’m not longer as skeptical as I was.

He’s truly a focal point for the defense, using his versatility to open up more for the rest of the unit. If he wasn’t doing well then the entire defense would likely suffer and become more vanilla.
