Despite the small sample size, Jalen Ramsey has already propelled himself up to the top of the rookie rankings this preseason.

In case you didn’t catch the Jacksonville Jaguars’ most recent preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Jalen Ramsey was outstanding. We’ve already talked about it plenty on Black and Teal (especially considering he only played a few series), but the local media and fans aren’t the only ones taking notice.

Ramsey has been lauded for his brief performance by many, and

now you can include Pro Football Focus on the list

:

"5. Jalen Ramsey, CB, Jaguars (Florida State)Snaps: 16Key stat: Average tackle depth against Tampa Bay was -0.3 yards behind the line of scrimmageRunning with: First teamRamsey saw his first preseason action this past week, playing sixteen snaps against the Buccaneers and showing the kind of monstrous run defense that saw him top PFF’s cornerback grades a year ago at Florida State. He notched two defensive stops in the game, including a tackle for a loss of 6 yards on the play."

Ramsey’s skill set is so diverse that many draftniks projected Ramsey’s best position in the pros to be safety – he showed a little bit of why that made sense last weekend. Ramsey was a force in the run game, bursting past the line of scrimmage and through bigger defenders to get to the ball carrier on a few occasions. He’s clearly physical enough to line up in the box and consistently provide support in the run game.

Oh yeah he’s also a terrific cover corner.

Pro Football Focus didn’t even mention Ramsey’s plays in coverage, blanketing Mike Evans and not giving quarterback Jameis Winston much room to work with. Ramsey has struggled at times in camp against Allen Robinson, but it’s actually a blessing that he gets to practice against one of the best receivers in the entire league fairly often.

I’m sure we’ll have plenty more to write about Ramsey after this weekend’s matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals.
