Even at the peak of the Doug Pederson era, the Jacksonville Jaguars were never known for being a physical team. First-year head coach Liam Coen is quickly changing that.
Coen has quickly turned the Jags into a physical team. Trevor Lawrence has noticed the change and recently talked about it.
The Jaguars will be a tough team under Liam Coen
Trevor Lawrence talked to the local media ahead of the Week 1 matchup against the Carolina Panthers. He touched on several topics, including the team's new identity under Liam Coen.
"I feel like everyone is on the same page. Yeah, who we want to be, and I think who we're becoming, right? But you're not really tested till the season and adversity hits," Lawrence responded when asked if he knew what kind of team the Jags are (9:23 mark). "And I have a good feeling about how we're going to respond, but you got to see it."
Lawrence continued, "And there's going to be, as good of a year as we could have, there's still going to be some adversity and some ups and downs, and it's about just staying together. So we've been preaching that, and the guys have bought into it. That's what's important, not that it's said, but that people actually believe in and do it. And I have a lot of confidence in it."
Later in his media availability session, Lawrence was asked to describe the Jags under Coen. His response was simple:
"We're a tough, physical team. It's something we're going to pride ourselves on. Think being situationally really smart, that's such a big part of this game. And this league, games come down to one score more often than they don't. So the situations are huge. That'll win and lose you a lot of games. And then just a detail-oriented group, that's really the small things matter so much," Lawrence said.
"I think that's something that this staff has done an awesome job of preaching to us, and it's been coached really hard every day. How important those details are, the communication, and something we've gotten a lot better at. But like I said, you want to see it all come together on Sunday when the bullets are flying, and see us do that for a full game."

The Jaguars weren't built to deal with adversity under Doug Pederson
To Doug Pederson's credit, he managed to steer the Jaguars in the right direction in 2022. After a 3-6 start, it looked like they were about to get eliminated from playoff contention, but something clicked, and they went on to qualify for the postseason and win the AFC South.
On the other hand, the Jags were in contention for the No. 1 seed in the AFC South in 2023 but ultimately collapsed, finding a way to lose six of their last seven games. Sure, not having Trevor Lawrence at full strength hurt their chances, but the truth is that they would've found a way to come out on top if they had been tough.
However, the biggest sign Jacksonville was soft under Pederson came during the Azeez Al-Shaiir debacle. Trevor Lawrence got knocked out, and not many of his teammates ran to his defense. Meanwhile, the whole Houston Texans sideline, even head coach DeMeco Ryans, got behind the linebacker even though he was the instigator.
The good news is that Doug Pederson is gone, and Liam Coen has been a breath of fresh air in Jacksonville. As Trevor Lawrence noted, the Jaguars still need to show up on Game Day, but based on his comments, opposing teams should get to know their new identity soon.
