After spending the offseason recovering from a shoulder injury, Trevor Lawrence is as healthy as he's been in a while. He must now keep improving if he wants to bounce back and help the Jacksonville Jaguars steer the ship in the right direction.

The good news is that Lawrence has made significant strides since the end of the 2024 season. He just showcased the progress he's made at the mock game the team held at EverBank Stadium just before the preseason. If that wasn't enough, head coach Liam Coen believes his quarterback has a couple traits that could allow him to unlock his potential.

Why Jaguars HC Liam Coen believes Trevor Lawrence can be great

Liam Coen made an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show and said that Lawrence is showing notable improvement, citing his performance at the mock game as proof of it.

"If you go to our scrimmage under the lights the other night, and then our practice yesterday, [I] saw major improvements from Trevor, really, since getting into this system," Coen told host Rich Eisen when asked what he's seen in Lawrence (3:58 mark). "As you know, Rich, like it's Sean [McVay], the system it's not the easiest to learn. There's a lot of different complications in terms of the motions, the shifts, the cans, the amount that we do end up putting on the quarterback, ultimately, and not just the quarterback, but the entire unit of itself."

Coen continued, "And so he's starting to see it before it occurs. Now he's the motions and shifts and alignments are all starting to become second nature for him, and now you're starting to see that talent just go out and be on display. And so is it perfect every day? No, and that's the beauty of it is that he's learning every single day, and we're learning about him every single day."

Later in his sitdown with Eisen, Coen said that Lawrence does have the two traits that could allow him to be great.

"But the guy is mentally and physically tough, and you can always start with that. The great ones are always mentally and physically tough, that I've been around at least. And so you can always start there. And he's talented, and he wants to be good. He wants to be great. And so I've been really pleased with him over the last two practices, especially," Coen said.

Although Lawrence has had a few rough practices, he's routinely fared well in training camp. His performance at the scrimmage, in particular, has stood out, and Coen hasn't hesitated to praise him for it.

Trevor Lawrence can help the Jaguars get back on track in 2025

Liam Coen has actively been working with Trevor Lawrence to hones his mechanics. So far, the fifth-year quarterback has handled the coaching well, and now that health is not an issue, he's in a position to bounce back after a pair of unremarkable seasons.

Aside from Coen's tutelage, Lawrence has an upgraded arsenal of weapons and a beefed-up offensive line. Couple that with a renewed emphasis on running the ball and an improved defense, and No. 16 will no longer have to carry the team on his shoulders.

On the other hand, precisely because Lawrence has everything he needs to succeed, he no longer has excuses to play like he did in 2022 and reclaim his place as one of the top-10 quarterbacks in the NFL. The time is now.
