Travon Walker is already making the Jaguars look awfully smart for extending him

Defensive end Travon Walker missed time and only registered 2.5 sacks in 2025. However, the Jacksonville Jaguars made it a priority to lock him up long-term, giving him a four-year extension worth $110.

Although the decision came as a bit of a surprise, the Jags had seen Walker as a mainstay of the defense and wanted to keep it that way long-term. Moreover, he had already proven that he could play at a high level, registering a combined 20.5 sacks in 2023 and 2024. Had the Thomaston, Georgia native stayed healthy, there's a chance he might have reached the 10-sack mark in 2025 as well.

Anyhow, Walker had a strong offseason after getting his new deal. And he wasted no time proving the fruits of his work in the 34-10 win over the Cleveland Brown in the season opener.

Against the Browns, Travon Walker had 1.5 sacks and seven total pressures. What stands out about his performance is that he played 10 of 32 snaps at defensive tackle (nearly one third of his total tally, h/t to John Shipley for digging the stat) at defensive tackle. Don't be surprised if the coaching staff continues to use him that way to lock up his true potential as a movable chess piece like he was on the Bulldogs defense. But wait, there's more!

Walker's pressure rate of 28.0 percent in Week 1 was second only to Kwity Paye's 33.3 percent. Simply put, he's having the kind of impact the Jags envisioned when they extended him.

For his part, Liam Coen told the local media ahead of the Broncos game that he was pleased with Walker's performance against the Browns, noting that he relied on his instincts to make plays.

"I thought he wreaked some havoc, especially early on in the game. I think those guys all were doing a nice job rushing and affecting the quarterback at times," Coen told reporters (9:43 mark). "Yeah, like he can be a savage when he really wants to be, right? And like when he's going, and he's staying low and coming off the rock and not hesitating, or kind of waiting for the set, like and just going and causing havoc. And he can be that way."

Coen continued, "And I was pleased to see that show up in Week 1, especially, and to see some of the coverage in the front match each other. And we have a obviously have a huge challenge this week because I think Denver's got one of the better offensive lines in the NFL as well."

Granted, it's just one game, but if Walker continues to have that kind of impact, he will make an already good deal look even better.

Trevon Walker is living up to the expectations the Jaguars have for him

Back in the offseason, Liam Coen challenged Travon Walker to be more like legendary defensive tackle Aaron Donald, not necessarily in terms of playing at a Hall of Fame level, but rather in how he prepared. Based on his latest remarks, the fifth-year pass rusher is trending in the right direction.

Next, the Jaguars are going against the Denver Broncos in Week 2. Walker will have a prime opportunity to keep building his stock. He'll often be lined up against the offensive line duo of Quinn Meinerz and Mike McGlinchey. If he has success, it will be hard to overlook his rise any longer.

It will also increase the odds of the Jaguars leaving Empower Field with their second win of the season.
