The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Quintin Morris in the aftermath of the 2025 NFL Draft. While the veteran tight end didn't initially make the team, he made such a good impression that he was eventually signed to the active roster.
By the end of the season, Morris had moved ahead of Hunter Long and Johnny Mundt on the depth chart. Not surprisingly, the Jags gave him a new one-year deal early in 2025. However, his future suddenly came into doubt when the team used a pair of draft picks on tight ends Nate Boerkircher and Tanner Koziol.
Sure, Morris won't give up without a fight but hasn't done much of note during the offseason program to boost his stock. Meanwhile, Koziol made the most of his chances and came out of mandatory minicamp as one of the biggest risers. With Boerkircher also in the mix, Morris could become a victim of the numbers game.
Tanner Koziol's surge could prompt the Jaguars to cut ties with Quintin Morris
John Shipley talked about his impressions from mandatory minicamp and picked Tanner Koziol as one of the team's two biggest risers, noting that he may have moved a couple spots up the depth chart.
"I questioned entering the offseason if Koziol could be anything more than the No. 4 tight end as a rookie due to his lack of skill-set as a blocker, but he looks closer to TE2 right now than he does to TE4," Shipley wrote. "He made big play after big play this offseason."
In case you were wondering, Shipley dubbed sophomore Jabbar Muhammad the other biggest riser, and understandably so. The second-year cornerback suddenly looks like a favorite to steal a roster spot after showing substantial improvement in the offseason program.
Circling back to Koziol, he turned heads at mandatory minicamp, while Nate Boerkircher sat out practices with an injury. It doesn't appear to be serious, but the former Texas A&M Aggie missed out on valuable reps and will need to catch up in training camp.
Having said that, it's hard to picture Boekircher tumbling down the depth chart, as he's expected to have a big role on offense as both a pass catcher and a blocker in 12 and 13 personnel sets. The same cannot be said about Quintin Morris, though.
Why the Jaguars could move on from Quintin Morris after signing him early in 2026
Plans change all the time, and the Jaguars probably didn't think that they would draft two tight ends when they re-signed Quintin Morris. Now, there's still time for the former Bowling Green Falcon to make ground in the position battle. However, he has his work cut out.
Morris is a heck of a blocker; the issue is that he isn't that great a pass catcher. Last year, he only hauled in six passes for 55 yards with one touchdown in 14 games and hasn't shown much improvement in the offseason. That puts him at a severe disadvantage. Heck, fellow tight end Hunter Long is a better receiver than him and could also be on the fringe.
Whether Morris sticks around could also come down to how many tight ends the Jaguars want to keep next season. If they want to carry four, he has better odds of sticking around.
The truth is that Quintin Morris could enter training camp on the hot seat, but he'll have a legitimate chance to convince the Jaguars that he deserves a roster spot.
