Rain may force Jaguars to lean on 4-headed running back monster vs. Broncos

The Jacksonville Jaguars already got their first win of the 2026 season when they beat the Cleveland Browns in the opener. They can get the second one when they travel to Mile High in Week 2 to take on the Denver Broncos.

While Denver is coming off an underwhelming loss, the Jags showcased their improved rushing attack against the Browns in Week 1. Based on the weather report, they may have to lean on the running game again to beat the Broncos.

The Jaguars may have to deal with rain vs. the Broncos

NFLWeather projects a 27 percent chance of precipitation when the Jaguars play Denver in Week 2. The temperature will range from 70 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

Ideally, the Jaguars will lean on Trevor Lawrence. Dating back to Week 10 of the 2025 season, he leads the NFL with 28 passing touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 111.5. On top of that, his 2,444 yards in that span rank fourth among quarterbacks in the league.

Simply put, Lawrence gives Jacksonville a realistic chance to come out of Empower Field with a win, as long as he keeps playing like he has. That said, No. 16 may not be able to sling the pigskin if it rains. If it does, he probably won't dial up many deep shots and will instead attempt high-completion throws closer to the line of scrimmage.

On top of that, the Jags may have to run the ball more than they originally planned. Then again, that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.

The Jaguars can lean on their running game to wear down the Broncos defense

The Jags are entering Week 2 with an unusual clean bill of health. That means that Bhayshul Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Ameer Abdullah, and LeQuint Allen Jr. will be available for the game. Jacksonville could use all four if it rains.

Tuten is currently RB1 on the depth chart. He had success toting the rock in the opener, racking up 66 rushing yards on 16 carries. On top of that, he hauled in one catch for 22 yards. But when Jacksonville needs tough yards, Rodriguez is the go-to guy. His numbers didn't pop off the stat sheet against the Browns, but he excelled in short-yardage situations.

On the other hand, Allen is back in the mix. Although he suited up for the season opener, he didn't play as he was recovering from a hip injury he sustained in training camp. The sophomore running back popped up on the Week 2 injury report but didn't get an injury designation for the game, so he'll once again be the primary pass-blocker and pass-catcher out of the backfield.

During Allen's absence in Week 1, Ameer Abdullah was Jacksonville's third-down back. He showed he still has gas left in the tank, registering four carries for 32 yards against the Browns. With all four in the mix, the Jaguars can rotate their running backs to keep them fresh and gas the Denver defense at the same time.

Of course, the Broncos will also lean on J.K. Dobbins if the weather conditions don't allow them to throw the ball. Dobbins has averaged 5.0 yards per carry in 11 games with Denver, so he's a threat whenever he has the football in his hands. If Jacksonville doesn't contain him, he could run amok.

Then again, the Jags had the best run defense last season, and if Week 1 proved anything is that that won't change in 2026.

So whether it rains or not, the Jaguars have have a legitimate chance to beat the Broncos. It will be up to them make the most of it.
