Trevor Lawrence explains why heated scuffle with Gabe Davis was good for the Jaguars
The Jacksonville Jaguars won the first game of the season when they beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. It wasn't easy. Besides having to fight until the very last minute, they had several rough moments throughout the game. One of them took place on the sidelines when Trevor Lawrence and wide receiver Gabe Davis got into a small altercation.
Sideline reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala of CBS Sports reported on the TV broadcast that Lawrence and Davis got into a heated exchange and had to be separated by teammates.
Andrew Joseph of USA TODAY Sports hypnotizes that Lawrence not targeting Davis on the play below led to the kerfuffle.
Not long after the argument, Lawrence targeted Davis and he proceeded to fumble the football.
Davis ultimately ended up with three receptions for 38 yards on four targets. Meanwhile, rookie Brian Thomas Jr. hauled in five receptions, including one for 85 yards, for a total of 122 yards, so it's easy to see why No. 16 would favor him. Similarly, Christian Kirk, who wasn't off to a great start this season, caught four receptions for 88 yards.
Trevor Lawrence and Gabe Davis handled the incident well
While you never want to see players get into a quarrel, especially on the sidelines during a live broadcast, the Jaguars were able to put it behind it and went on to win the game. Heck, you could even make the case that it helped them gain focus, based on what Trevor Lawrence told the local media after the game.
"Sat it down, firmly... loosely. It happens in this game. People that have played it know. People that haven't probably don't really understand all the emotions that go into it. And there was some frustration. We had a little back and forth and cleared it up. It's all it is," Lawrence responded when asked about the original report. "I think that's what stuff like that's important. And I love when stuff like that happens, you confront issues."
"If I'm pissed about something, he's pissed about something, let's talk about it and move on. And we did a great job of that. Gabe is always good at communicating, so got on the page quick, and it was good," Lawrence said.
All things considered, Lawrence managed the situation well. Moreover, he's right when he says it won't always be sunshine and flowers, especially when passionate individuals don't always agree on how to achieve the same end goal. Here's No. 16 talking about the altercation. His remarks start at the 6:32 mark.
In this case, both Lawrence and Davis were simply frustrated they didn't make a play that would help the team. They talked about it, shrugged it off, and moved on. That's the healthy approach to those kind of situations.
It's also noteworthy to point out that the duo has built a solid rapport dating back to the offseason. So it's understandable that they were frustrated when they saw their connection fail to come to fruition.
In the end, the altercation seems to be a non-issue. Add the fact that the Jaguars won, and there's a reason to believe that Trevor Lawrence and Gabe Davis won't be going at it again any time soon.
