Shad Khan must act on feeling after Jaguars' loss to Bills and take drastic action
Owner Shad Khan told the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason that he expected them to win in 2024. Three weeks into the regular season and after the embarrassing 47-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills, it's fair to say that they've come up short. Not surprisingly, Khan couldn't keep his cool after the game.
Demetrius Harvey of the Florida Times-Union reports that someone close to the owner says that he's "angrier than I have ever seen Shad," pointing out that he's "usually a reserved, kind gentleman."
Khan said during the announcement of his partnership with the City of Jacksonville to make a $1.4 billion investment in renovations to EverBank Stadium that he expected the Jaguars to win in 2024. He later met with coaches and players to make it clear that he wasn't misquoted. He went even further, noting that this was the best team Jaguars ever, and he envisioned it playing like it.
Since Khan bought the team, he's been known for his patience, always trying to avoid making a move too early. Heck, you could make the case that he stuck with general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley longer than he should have.
The exception to the rule was Urban Meyer, who wasted no time getting embroiled in issues off and on the field. Less than a year after hiring him in 2021, the owner kicked the embattled head coach to the curve. Fast forward to 2024, and Doug Pederson's seat should be getting blazing hot after the team's 0-3 start.
There are several paths Jaguars owner Shad Khan could take with Doug Pederson
Shad Khan isn't going to fire himself, and he just gave Trevor Lawrence a five-year deal worth $275 million, so he won't be going anywhere anytime soon. Doug Pederson, on the other hand, is under a lot of pressure to deliver, and if the Jaguars are going to start over, they'll need to do it with a new head coach and probably a different general manager.
Urban Meyer notwithstanding, Khan tends to have commendable patience when it comes to firing his head coaches. He held onto Gus Bradley for too long but eventually moved on from him with two games left in 2016. On the other hand, Doug Marrone and Mike Mularkey finished the season.
One thing that could lead Khan to cut ties with Pederson midseason is that waiting to make a move in the past hasn't paid off. Having said that, it's hard to envision the owner outright giving Doug P his walking papers after the loss to the Bills.
Maybe Khan will have a meeting with Pederson and Trent Baalke and issue a decree. Perhaps he could give him a few weeks to show notable progress and ask them to make changes in the coaching staff. If they don't right the ship by a deadline, they both will get the boot.
Ultimately, Shad Khan made a heavy commitment to the Jaguars because he wanted to see them win. They aren't, so he could make drastic changes in the remainder of the 2024 season to get a return on his investment.
