Doug Pederson is almost certainly going to be the 1st NFL coach fired in 2024

• The Jaguars aren't doing so great. That falls on Doug Pederson.

If you had said before the 2024 NFL season began that Doug Pederson was in danger of losing his job, you would've gotten a blank stare. However, that doesn't look that farfetched based on how things have played out and how dreadful the Jacksonville Jaguars have looked against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3.

After losing to the Miami Dolphins and the Cleveland Browns, it seemed like the Jags were going to have a chance to bounce back against the Bills. But that hasn't been the case — far from it. First, they helped Buffalo make history by allowing a touchdown in each of their first three drives. This marked only the sixth time in the past 30 years that they pulled off such a feat.

That was just the start, though. Things wouldn't get any better the rest of the first half. The Bills went on to score two more touchdowns while Jacksonville managed to kick a measly field goal, which brings us to Pederson.

This is the most talented team the Jaguars have assembled in team history. That's at least what owner Shad Khan believes and he might be wrong when you factor in playmakers such as Trevor Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne, and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. That put lots of pressure on Pederson to win in 2024.

Pederson was hired in 2022 after the Urban Meyer experiment. That year, the Jags had low expectations but managed to turn heads when they reached the playoffs and won the AFC South. Seen as a potential contender last year, Jacksonville got off to a strong start but faded down the stretch. They ultimately missed the postseason. It's fair to assume that Khan won't allow another meltdown.

Doug Pederson is failing as the head coach of the Jaguars

Shad Khan said when he announced when he announced the partnership with the City of Jacksonville to spend $1.4 billion on renovations to EverBank Stadium that he expected the Jags to win. He later made it clear that he wasn't misquoted, saying that he wants the Jags to make the playoffs.

However, this Jaguars team is struggling to reach the end zone. Can you say with a straight face that they can reach the playoffs? They're certainly underperforming under Pederson. Right now, the Jags look uninspiring and unprepared. That's a reflection of their head coach.

Compounding the issue is that Pederson revamped the defensive side of the ball but chose to keep offensive line coach Phil Rauscher and offensive coordinator Press Taylor, two of the biggest culprits behind the team's struggles.

The offense, which is supposed to be Pederson's area of expertise, lacks consistency and vision. This is frustrating when you consider that you have a franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence and the front office spent the offseason refurnishing his arsenal of weapons. Apart from drafting Brian Thomas Jr., they signed Gabe Davis in free agency. Simply, their record and performance are inexcusable.

Now the Jaguars are close to being 0-3 and seemingly without direction. Firing Pederson right now won't solve their problems long-term but it will show accountability.

Make no mistake, Pederson was pivotal in helping the team heal after the Urban Meyer debacle but the good grace he built has worn off. If he won't be part of the solution, Shad Khan must bring in someone who will be. Firing him right now would help Jacksonville get a head start in the search for his replacement.
