Dalvin Cook makes little sense for the Jacksonville Jaguars right now
The Jacksonville Jaguars are a good team that has a few more things to do before the season gets going. Most of it is preparation for what is expected to be an outstanding year.
After what happened last year, they want to show everyone that it wasn't a fluke. They are a good team with an elite quarterback that can take big steps every year.
Well, on Thursday, we learned that running back Dalvin Cook was released by the Minnesota Vikings. He has been an elite player in the league for a long time but Minnesota decided to move on.
This is becoming a trend with aging superstar running backs. Over the course of his time, Cook has been one of the best running backs in the NFL. He will be signed by a team soon.
The Jacksonville Jaguars do not need Dalvin Cook at this point in time.
This is not a move that suits the Jacksonville Jaguars at this time. He is a great player and will continue to be a great player but the Jaguars don't need to focus on offense right now. More specifically, they don't need to focus on the running game.
Travis Etienne might become a superstar in his own right. He had a fantastic rookie season last year and now he is looking to improve on that. After playing in all 17 games, Etienne had over 1100 yards and five touchdowns. That is certainly a very nice floor to start his career.
The Jaguars also drafted Tank Bigsby in the 2023 NFL Draft. They took him in the third round (88th overall) out of Auburn. There is a very good chance that he becomes an outstanding back in this league.
Paired up with Etienne in 2023, they should form a very good run game. That is obviously a very important aspect of the offense, especially as Trevor Lawrence continues to develop. He is already one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the league so this could help him climb even further.
As a result of these variables, the Jags just simply don't need a guy like Dalvin Cook. He is a great player but that money would be much better spend somewhere else.
