Liam Coen just gave Jaguars fans every reason to buy into Trevor Lawrence hype

In spite of the outside noise the past few years, the Jacksonville Jaguars have stuck with Trevor Lawrence, and understandably so. The former Clemson Tiger was dubbed a generational talent coming out of collegue, but he wasn't able to put it all together until Liam Coen became the head coach in 2025.

Now in his second season working together, Coen is thrilled to see his quarterback quietly take his game to the next level.

Liam Coen had a sitdown with Pete Schrager of ESPN and stated that his relationship with Trevor Lawrence has only gotten better since the end of 2026, noting that he was proud of the way he played to finish the year.

"Yeah, that relationship has only gotten better and better. Once the season ended, I was very proud of the way that he competed and improved throughout the season," Coen told Schrager (22:03 mark). "And then you get out to the Super Bowl for Honors Week, and we were both fortunate enough to be there, and we got to hang out and be together off the field and out of the building, and that was awesome."

Coen continued, "We've had multiple opportunities to be able to get together out of this facility and away from here, and I've just got a ton of respect for the human being, the guy, his family, the husband and father that he is, and friends."

Later in the exchange, Coen said that he was impressed with Lawrence's performance in the offseason program, noting that the sixth-year quarterback made several wow plays in practice.

"We get out to spring practice, and just kind of kept doing this. I would say the last about eight or so practices, man, he was lighting it up. He was making throws on a daily basis that not just myself, but everybody around him were very high. And you're like, "Whoa, dang! Did he just fit that in there? I think he was trying new things a little bit. He was getting the comfort and confidence to just fit some balls into windows maybe he wouldn't otherwise, or to practice some of these new things that we were incorporating throughout the spring, and without thinking as much, right?" Coen said.

"And so, as much as we're trying to coach him on a day-to-day basis of improvement, you also at one at some point want to be like, 'Dude, you got it, man. Just go play.' Here are some of the parameters. Just go play and have fun and cut it loose, which he's continued to do throughout the off-season program. So, to get him at a high and confident coming into training camp. Yeah, we're excited about that."

Lawrence got off to a slow start to the 2025 season. Some of that was due to the fact that Coen's scheme was the most complex he had to learn in his career. On top of that, he spent the offseason recovering from a shoulder injury and tweaking his footwork. But once No. 16 hit his stride, he played like a top-10 quarterback, completing 62.6 percent of his throws for 1,856 yards with 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions (three against the Arizona Cardinals).

The expectation is that Lawrence will keep improving in his second season under Coen.

Slowly, Trevor Lawrence is beginning to get the recognition he deserves, while NFL analysts have come to realize that the Jaguars haven't always set him up for success. That's been quickly changing with Liam Coen leading the way. That said, there's still plenty of work left.

Lawrence next needs to prove that he can play at a high level and put the team on his shoulders year in and year out.

If he pulls it off, perhaps we can be talking about Trevor Lawrence in the same breath as Joe Burrow and other top-echelon quarterbacks. Similarly, the Jaguars will become a contender if he can achieve that level of play.
