Josh Cameron's jaw-dropping TD proves Jaguars can count on him to make plays

The Jacksonville Jaguars weren't in dire need of help at receiver ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, but that didn't stop them from using a pair of selections on Josh Cameron and CJ Williams. Both of them made a strong impression in training camp. Not only did they do enough to earn a roster spot but a role on offense in their rookie season as well. Fast forward to Week 1, and Cameron has already had an impact.

Cameron scored his first NFL touchdown pass against the Cleveland Browns in the opener. While Trevor Lawrence deserves lots of praise for threading the needle, Cameron also delivered when his number was called.

The former Baylor Bear finished the game with two catches for 20 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers don't pop off the stat sheet but most definitely prove that the Jags found a late-round gem.

Liam Coen met with the local media following the 34-10 trouncing of the Browns. He praised Josh Cameron, noting that Trevor Lawrence trusts him to make tough plays.

"It was a heck of a throw by Trevor as well, threading the needle. But man, Josh has continued to put that on tape," Coen told the media (4:59 mark). "He's done it for us all throughout training camp, really making contested tough catches. Even when he's covered, the quarterbacks do trust him to put it in his vicinity, and he's going to make a play."

Coen continued, "But yeah, for Josh to be able to come out here in his first NFL real action, minus the preseason, and catch a touchdown on a contested catch. Then he had to come back on our sideline that I thought he ran a really good route on [Denzel] Ward, and that's got to give him a ton of confidence moving forward."

On a related note, Cameron's grab was Lawrence's 100th career touchdown, and he was kind enough that he let him keep it.

Cameron ended up logging 19 snaps (33 percent of the team's total on offense). Following his strong start to the season, expect him to keep seeing that kind of playing time.

Josh Cameron won't have a big role despite jaw-dropping TD in the Jaguars' opener

As long as Parker Washington, Jakobi Meyers, and Brian Thomas Jr. stay healthy, Josh Cameron won't have a big role on offense, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It shows that the Jaguars have ample depth at receiver, and don't have to rush him into action.

If anything, it's a good thing that Cameron is behind all three, as he can get to learn from them and continue to hone his skills, so in case the Cedar Park, Texas native suddenly has an uptick in playing time, he'll be good to go.

Sure, it's a long season, but if Week 1 taught us anything is that the Jaguars can count on him if they need him to make plays.
