The Jacksonville Jaguars are wasting no time reducing their roster to a 53-man roster after the preseason finale. They've already made a flurry of moves and will continue to release players ahead of cutdown day.
As expected, the Jags cut ties with quarterback John Wolford. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported the news. This wasn't particularly surprising when you take into account that the Jags were projected to keep two quarterbacks in 2025. On the other hand, the move paves the way for Seth Henigan to make the practice squad.
Why the Jaguars moved on from John Wolford
With Liam Coen as their offensive coordinator, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers carried two quarterbacks on the active roster. He's expected to do the same now that he's the head coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars. That meant that when John Wolford joined the Jags, his best-case scenario was always going to be the practice squad.
The preseason came, and Wolford didn't look great, completing 52.9 percent of his throws for 118 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. Granted, undrafted Seth Henigan didn't fare much better but may have more upside than his veteran counterpart at this stage of their respective careers.
Now, Henigan could also get the boot, and there's still a chance Wolford will sign to the practice squad. That said, the Jags may be ready to move on from him.
An undrafted free agent in 2018, the Wake Forest product signed with the New York Jets and spent his rookie season in the practice squad. He bolted for the Los Angeles Rams the following year and played three seasons with them.
It was with the Rams that Wolford met Coen, and his relationship with him is partly why he was with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last year.

The Jaguars could keep Seth Henigan in the practice squad or look for upgrades
Trevor Lawrence is firmly entrenched as the starter, and Nick Mullens is the primary backup. Barring anything unexpected, the Jags will carry both on the initial 53-man roster and sign Seth Henigan to the practice squad.
Having said that, the team's brass could either look for upgrades at quarterback on the waiver wire. The Atlanta Falcons released Ben DeNicci, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers also cut ties with Kyle Trask after rolling with Teddy Bridgewater as the backup behind Baker Mayfield.
Given Coen's knowledge of Trask during his stint with the Bucs, nobody would bat an eye if the Jaguars made a run for him. A less likely possibility would be the target Jameis Winston via trade. Then again, general manager James Gladstone has shown that he's not afraid to get on the phone if he thinks it can help the team, so the prospect shouldn't completely be ruled out.
The bottom line is that things are turning out the way they were expected at quarterback, but don't be shocked if the Jaguars pull off a last-minute surprise.
