The Jacksonville Jaguars wrapped up the preseason when they faced the Miami Dolphins in the finale. Their 0-2-1 record might not have been what they wanted, but they are surely pleased with the work they put in.

Moreover, the team's brass got a chance to evaluate the roster and will now start to make the moves to get to 53 players on cutdown day. As a matter of fact, the Jags already got started a few days before the Dolphins game.

The Jaguars released Joshua Cephus and 2 others before the preseason finale:

The Jags caught observers by surprise when they cut ties with sophomore Joshua Cephus ahead of the finale. His release was a bit shocking because he appeared to be the favorite to win the sixth receiver spot after spending his rookie campaign in the practice squad.

Around the same time Jacksonville released Cephus, it also waived defensive tackle Eli Mostaert and wide receiver Darius Lassiter. Neither had a realistic chance to make the roster, so the front office got ahead of the curve and might've released both to better evaluate other players in the finale.

From an outside perspective, it's hard to tell who will get their walking paper or how the initial 53-man roster will look. That said, you can have an idea based on how the offseason program, training camp, and the preseason went.

For instance, linebacker Chad Muma didn't do enough to stand out while rookie Jack Kiser made a strong impression the past few months and solidified his case for a roster spot.

Undrafted rookies Danny Striggow and BJ Green also took advantage of their opportunities and should feel good about their chances to make the team. On the other hand, if both get the nod, defensive end Tyler Lacy could be on his way out.

Sophomore Javon Foster also is trending toward being a victim of the numbers game. The Jags have a bit of a surplus at offensive tackle, and the former Mizzou Tiger didn't do enough to show he deserve to stick around.

The one position that may be a bit tough to figure out is safety. Andrew Wingard, Antonio Johnson, and Darrell Savage were in a three-way battle for the starting job next to Eric Murray. All three had compelling case, but it would be a bit of a surprise to see Jacksonville keep all three.

For his part, head coach Liam Coen said after the finale that it won't be easy to trim down the roster but feels like several players helped themselves with a strong showing against the Dolphins.

"Yeah, it's especially as your first. So many of these guys, like I told them last night, have been a part of creating our edge and who we are as a team. And so those decisions aren't easy at all, especially as a young coach doing it for the first time," Coen said when asked how tough cutdown day will be as a first-time head coach. " Really, those conversations aren't easy. Those decisions aren't easy."

Coen continued, "But I think, I believe some guys probably helped themselves out tonight in some ways, whether it's for our team or somebody else's team, and ultimately, you want to help guys to continue to further their dreams as well, as obviously make our own roster as competitive as it can be."
