With free agency slowing down significantly, the Jacksonville Jaguars chose to bolster the wide receiver corps, signing Jacob Bobo to a two-year deal offer sheet worth $5 million with $4.5 million guaranteed. The news came as a bit of a surprise because the Jags weren't in need of immediate reinforcements at the position. Having said that, they're getting an underrated weapon on offense who can also contribute on special teams.

And that's the thing, Bobo won't be leading the NFL in receiving yards any time soon. Instead, he'll probably be No. 5 on a receiver depth chart that includes Jakobi Meyers, Travis Hunter, Parker Washington, and Brian Thomas Jr. On the other hand, the former UCLA Bruin was a special teams ace with the Seattle Seahawks, the team that signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2023. There's a strong chance he'll have a similar role in Duval.

That's not great news for another veteran who will most likely need to compete for a roster spot in training camp.

The Jaguars signing of Jake Bobo could spell doom for Tim Jones

Jake Bobo only has three accrued seasons, so he was a restricted free agent. The Hawks signed him to an original-round tender, allowing other teams to sign him to an offer sheet. The Jaguars did, and unless Seattle matches, he'll be playing in Jacksonville next season.

Precisely because of the amount of the offer sheet, it's fair to say that the Jags are making a big commitment to him. Barring anything unexpected, Bobo should make the initial 53-man roster, which directly affects Tim Jones.

After going undrafted in 2021, Jones signed with the Jags. He spent his rookie campaign in the practice squad but made the initial 53-man roster each of the next three years. The former Southern Miss Golden Eagle hit the open market in 2025 and bolted for the Minnesota Vikings. However, he was released just a few games into the regular season.

After his brief stint with the Vikes, Jones returned to Jacksonville. He landed in the practice squad but was promoted to the active roster a few times via standard elevation. After the season ended, the Jags signed the Biloxi, Mississippi native to a future contract, but he will have trouble sticking around in 2026 after the arrival of Bobo.

The Jaguars could move on from Tim Jones after signing Jake Bobo

Unless the injury bug strikes, Jake Bobo probably won't get much playing time on offense. That said, he could have a big role on special teams. That doesn't bode well for Tim Jones, who pretty much brings the same skill set to the table. Couple that with the fact that his $1.2 million salary for 2026 isn't guaranteed, and nobody will bat an eye if he's shown the door.

It's also worth noting that the team's brass isn't particularly attached to Jones since the past regime brougth him in. Granted, he's played for special teams coach Heath Farwell, but that may not be enough to help him stick around.

The truth is that Tim Jones was always going to have an uphill battle to climb to make the Jaguars roster in 2026. His odds just took a massive hit after the arrival of Jake Bobo.
