The Washington Commanders let Dyami Brown walk in free agency, and the Jacksonville Jaguars didn't hesitate to give him a one-year deal because they think he could build off his strong finish to 2024. So far, Brown has been everything the Jags bargained for and then some. Meanwhile, the Commanders could be second-guessing their decision to leave in light of the latest Terry McLaurin news.

Several days into training camp, insider Jordan Schultz reports that McLaurin has requested a trade after failing to get a deal that reflects his status as a WR1 in the NFL. Apparently, his age has been a roadblock in getting an extension, and both sides are far apart.

A third-round pick in 2019, McLaurin was 81 yards short of reaching the 1,000-yard mark in his rookie campaign but has since logged five consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. On top of that, he's earned two Pro Bowl designations, which makes it easy to understand he feels like he deserves a pay bump.

What kind of contract does Terry McLaurin want?

McLaurin is currently making an annual average of a bit over $22 million. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN broke the news in July that Washington was willing to give him a new contract that pays him just above his current one, but he wants north of $30 million per year. And in case you were wondering, the Jaguars aren't a feasible trade destination for McLaurin.

Leaving aside the cost of trading the former Ohio State Buckeye, they're set at receiver. They simply have no room for him, with Dyami Brown, Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter, and Parker Washington in the fold.

The Commanders could use Dyami Brown in light of Terry McLaurin's trade request

Let's not mince words. Dyami Brown was underwhelming early in his stint with the Commanders, registering 29 catches for 476 yards with three touchdowns in his first three NFL seasons. It wasn't until 2024 that he turned the corner. And precisely because there were questions about whether he could sustain that level of play, the Jaguars were able to sign him at a relatively low cost.

Granted, $10 million a year isn't chump change, but it's well below the top rates for receivers in the NFL nowadays. Moreover, early signs indicate that it could turn out to be a bargain. Brown has made a strong impression in both the offseason program and training camp.

At this stage, there should be no doubts that he'll have no trouble picking up where he left off in 2024. In fact, expecting him to set new career bests for catches and receiving yards in a season is a realistic possibility.

Meanwhile, the Commanders find themselves having to deal with McLaurin's contract impasse. Sure, they have Deebo Samuel in the mix, but if McLaurin misses any time in the regular season, they'll surely come to regret letting Dyami Brown sign with the Jaguars for a "measly" $10 million in 2025.
