Some signings don't look great on paper but ultimately turn out to be great deals. That could be the case for the Jacksonville Jaguars after bringing in wide receiver Dyami Brown on a one-year deal in free agency.

At the time, there were concerns about Brown because he was a non-factor throughout most of his stint with the Washington Commanders. It wasn't until 2024 that he turned the corner and played a pivotal role in their road to the NFC Championship. So far, the former North Carolina Tar Heel has proven to be everything the Jags bargained for, and then some.

Dyami Brown is making a strong impression in Jaguars training camp

When the Jaguars signed Dyami Brown, general manager James Gladstone said that he expected his strong finish to 2024 to carry over next season. He's off to a great start in Jacksonville. The 2021third-round pick routinely stood out during the offseason program and has continually shown up in training camp. On Day 6, he was the talk of the town.

J.P. Shadrick of the team's official website wrote after Day 6 of training camp that Brown stood out during padded practice, pointing out that the fifth-year receiver made some jaw-dropping plays. Below's the skinny:

"The day brougth the expected intensity of a full-padded practice in intense Florida heat, and it also brought a breakout day for veteran wide receiver Dyami Brown," Shadrick wrote. "Brown, who signed with the Jaguars in March as an unrestricted free agent from Washington, was expected to bring a big-play element to complement wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr., and Travis Hunter. he showed that element big-time through the offseason program - and he showed it again Tuesday morning with a multiple long end-around runs and a deep completion late in practice from starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence in a late-game situational drill."

Shadrick continued, "He also caught a touchdown pass from Lawrence in red-zone work."

John Shipley of Sports Illustrated was equally effusive of Brown, arguing that the veteran wideout made the two best plays of the day, the same two Shadrick raved about.

At this point, nobody should bat an eye if Brown is WR2 opposite Brian Thomas Jr. to start the season. He logged a career-best 30 receptions for 308 yards with one touchdown in 2024. He should have no trouble setting a new personal best for catches and yards in Jacksonville.

Jaguars OC Grant Udinski believes Dyami Brown is versatile

Following Day 7 of Jaguars training camp, Grant Udinski met with the local media and said that Brown is picking up where he left off in 2024, pointing out that he's been able to handle everything the team has thrown at him.

"I think that's kind of what you saw a little bit from him last year," Udinski responded when asked what he's seen in Brown (He has that ability, you know, I think the improvement in some of the stuff that he's shown in the run game, and even with the different routes that we've asked him to run, will only hopefully expand his ability to create explosives. But last year, whether it was running go balls or vertical routes or with the ball in hand on screens and different plays, I think that's something that's in his wheelhouse."

Below's Udinski's full exchange with the press corps. His comments about Brown start at the 2:10 mark.

It's too early to tell how the Dyami Brown signing will turn out how the regular season starts. But if his strong training camp is an indication, the Jaguars will be getting plenty of bang for the buck.
