After several years of waiting for his chance, Walker Little finally became the starting left tackle for the Jacksonville Jaguars at the midpoint of 2024. Although there was chatter that he would have to compete for his job in the offseason, the fifth-year veteran solidified his spot as Trevor Lawrence's blindside protector with a strong offseason. Based on recent comments from head coach Liam Coen, he's not taking his foot off the pedal anytime soon.
Little has overall performed well, and Coen told the local media after Day 5 of training camp that he's been pleased with how the left tackle has fared in practice.
"I think Walker, the first few days, I thought, man, he was really on," Coen responded when he was asked what he's seen in Walker (6:01 mark). "Yesterday, Josh got him a few times, and I thought he came back out today, though, with a mindset of, 'man, I'm just going to be a little bit more patient with my hands and with my punch.' But he's punching a little bit too soon yesterday, just getting a little overextended."
Coen continued, "But I've been pleased with him, and he's his demeanor has been the same in terms of just the way that he handles himself and approaches it. I think he's been doing a good job getting some removal in the run game when we're asking him to."
Later in the exchange, Coen told the press corps that Little and the rest of the team's offensive tackles benefit from having to go against Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker in practice, noting that having to face top-notch competition makes everyone better.
"It's huge. I mean, those guys obviously can go. They can go anytime, you have good on good. We're trying to create an edge and sharpen our edge, and that's going to do that for us every single day. And then, hey, you get to move those guys down. When Travon goes down inside at a 4-I or at a three technique, now he's rushing on the guard, and those guys are getting to work," Coen said.
"But it's really important for us to continue that we're going to see a lot of good pass rushers in this league, as we know, and for us to be able to win more than not. That's the goal when you're playing that position."
Coen seems to be aware that Little isn't going to win every battle against a pass rusher of Josh Hines-Allen's caliber. That's probably why he sounds unfazed.

Why Jaguars LT Walker Little could have his best NFL season ever
Walker Little, a second-round selection in 2021, has always flashed talent. Heck, there's a reason he was at one point considered a potential top-10 draft selection dating back to his college days. However, didn't get his chance to start full-time until the Jacksonville Jaguars traded Cam Robinson at the midpoint in 2024. Before that, the Texas native was the swing tackle and even competed with Jawan Taylor for the right tackle job.
The good news is that the Jags have recognized that Walker is a starting-caliber player, and instead of holding him back, they're letting him do his thing, something the past regime failed to do. Now, all that speculation about him potentially being on shaky ground has gone out the window.
This will be the first time Walker Little is poised to be the starting left tackle full-time. But if he manages to build off his encouraging offseason, he should have no trouble having a banner year.
