Analyst makes appealing case for the Jaguars to trade Cam Robinson before deadline
The Jacksonville Jaguars got their first win of the 2024 season when they beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. However, they've got a long way to go to turn things around and there's no guarantee that they'll will. That's led observers to think that the Jags will be sellers before the November 5 deadline. Bradley Locker of Pro Football Focus, in particular, believes that left tackle Cam Robinson could garner interest if he's placed on the trade block.
Locker put together a list of trade candidates and included Robinson, pointing out that he's been serviceable the past three seasons and could potentially help teams a handful of teams.
"Robinson has been a solid left tackle for much of the past four years, particularly shining in pass blocking. The soon-to-be 29-year-old has ended each of the past three seasons with a pass-blocking efficiency above 97.0, although he’s already given up 13 pressures in 2024 — tying how many he allowed all of last year.
With Robinson set to hit the open market at the end of the year — and Jacksonville potentially looking at a large-scale roster overhaul — it would be logical to trade him. Candidates would include the Cowboys, Chiefs, Saints and Seahawks."
A second-round pick in the 2017 draft, Robinson has spent his whole career in Jacksonville. While he was inconsistent, he got slapped with the franchise tag in 2021. After a solid campaign, the Alabama product signed a three-year deal worth $54 million in 2022. While he was far from great, he was solid enough to keep Trevor Lawrence's blindside protected. Moreover, he became a leader on the offensive line.
for Unfortunately, the league suspended Robinson four games to start the 2023 season for violating its performance-enhancing drug policy. Once he returned to the lineup, the offensive line got a boost. Still, he's been the subject of trade speculation because he has a salary of $16.5 million this season and Walker Little could step in as his potential replacement if he's traded.
With the deadline looming, the Jaguars could decide to trade Robinson and roll with Little for the remainder of the season. After all, the former is set to become a free agent in 2025, and if the team's brass doesn't plan to bring him back, they might decide to get something in return for him instead of letting him walk and get nothing.
Another reason the Jags could trade Robinson is that he's been inconsistent this season. While he gave up no sacks and no pressures in the win over Indy, he gave up a concerning four sacks and 13 total pressures the first four games. This could lead them to move on from him if they think Little can perform better.
Should the Jaguars trade Cam Robinson before the deadline?
At this point, it's uncertain if the Jacksonville Jaguars will steer the ship in the right direction, but if they do, other clubs could show legitimate interest in Cam Robinson. This begs the question, should the Jags consider trading him?
Many teams who could use help at left tackle (Las Vegas Raiders, New England Patriots) aren't in contention, narrowing down the list of potential suitors for Robinson. But for the sake of argument, let's say he draws interest, the Jaguars should ask for a third-round pick and at worst get a fourth-rounder.
The issue with trading Robinson is Jacksonville would be left devoid of proven depth at offensive tackle. Walker Little is the swing tackle and can line up on both sides of the line of scrimmage. If the team's brass trades Robinson, Little would step in at left tackle, and rookie Javon Foster would become the primary backup at the position.
The trouble with that scenario is that the former Mizzou Tiger has yet to play this season and it's uncertain if the Jaguars would feel comfortable going with him.
Ultimately, trading Cam Robinson comes with a set of pros and cons and the Jacksonville Jaguars must decide whether they want depth this year or extra assets in 2025.
