2. Jacksonville Jaguars underachiever in 2022: Tim Jones, WR

You might think this is a reach. After all, Tim Jones wasn’t a starter, spent his rookie season in the Jaguars’ practice squad and didn’t play a single game. Moreover, he was the fifth wide receiver option on the Jaguars’ depth chart last year.

Having said that, the former Southern Miss Golden Eagle had a productive preseason, hauling in 14 receptions for 219 yards. In fact, his three catches for 103 yards against the Atlanta Falcons might have helped him secure a spot on the final 53-man roster.

But then, Jones disappeared in the regular season, catching a measly three passes for 30 yards. Granted, he wasn’t going to see much playing time behind Christian Kirk, Zay Jones, and Marvin Jones Jr. but you would think he would see the field often based on the flashes he displayed in the preseason. Instead, he ended up appearing in just 13 percent of the Jags’ offensive snaps.

In Jones’ defense, the coaching staff loved his blocking skills but that’s not the biggest quality you want in a wide receiver. Make no mistake, it’s a good thing that he’s carved a niche but he will need to make a leap in 2023 if he wants to avoid tumbling down the depth chart and end up in the practice squad.

Even though wide receiver isn’t a pressing need for the Jaguars this offseason, they could always take one in the draft. Moreover, Calvin Ridley will tentatively be reinstated, so Jones may find himself on the roster bubble ahead of the regular season.
