Scheme or not, the Jaguars need more from their defensive nucleus

The Jaguars’ defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell wanted to bring an aggressive defense. He comes over from Tampa Bay under Todd Bowles’s leadership. The scheme is effective when players can move from sideline to sideline.

The Jaguars’ defense had some experience when they were playing under Joe Cullen. Cullen’s multiple defensive schemes used players’ skills to their advantage. Conversely, it seems like the defensive schemes this year are out of position.

This is not a team that can be recovering from too many players being out of position. When the defense was getting torched for much of the middle of the season fans were seeing arm tackles. This is concerning when you take into account that arm tackles come from being out of position.

The Jaguars are a team that has a lot of talent on the top of the roster with not a lot of depth after the starters. Backup players enter the games with a significant drop-off in production.

The defense could play better if they were to even out the front of the defensive line. The four-man fronts would allow for more consistent pressure. Pressure creates opportunities for the whole defense. Depth should get tested before it’s forced with injury.

Free agents like Foye Oluokun have been tackling machines. Oluokun is leading the league in that category and his durability has been a great asset. Someone that the Jaguars will need for their playoff run.

Outside of him, the linebacking corps play fluctuates drastically. The game against the Texans could be one that might let Shaquille Quarterman a chance to get more reps. He lacks coverage skills but his play recognition is above average.

Another player that fans might remember is Paul Posluszny. Posluszny was a player that wasn’t known for being able to cover very well. He was able to keep himself in a position to make plays.

Other players could contribute more with better defensive line play. Limiting assignments for the rookie linebackers could improve play.

Devin Llyod showed his abilities earlier in the year. Llyod dropped off when teams would give him some different looks. When players are drafted early they are expected to be able to improve the team.

Coaches made the switch to Chad Muma. He stepped in to try to pick up the play of the linebackers. So far, the rookie linebacker had some success with the increase in playing time.

Again scheme should be as important to the Jaguars’ success as the players. Injuries happen to every team in the NFL. The teams that learn to use what they have can continue to be successful for longer.

Whoever ends up starting over the next couple of weeks the coaches need to see consistency. The Texans have played well against some of the top-tier teams in recent weeks. They should not be taken lightly but could be beaten with good strategic moves.

The playoffs are the ultimate proving grounds and measuring sticks. Trusting coach Pederson with his knowledge of the league is important. He will make sure the Jaguars are going to be competitive each week. In Doug, we trust!
