No. 3 Jaguars most controversial player in 2022: Laviska Sheault Jr., WR

Even though the Jaguars had a less-than-ideal situation at quarterback in 2020, wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. had a productive rookie campaign, hauling in 58 receptions for 600 yards and five touchdowns.

Viska was supposed to be even better in 2021 and become an important part of the Jaguars’ passing attack. However, he had a somewhat down year, averaging less than 10 yards. Moreover, he didn’t score a single touchdown. Then again, the whole offense was a mess and Shenault’s performance was a symptom, not the cause for Jacksonville’s inability to put points on the scoreboard.

Sure, Shenault can still getter and could improve as a player, but the Jaguars’ brass brought in Christian Kirk and Zay Jones in free agency. Both of them will get starting roles while Shenault gets bumped down the depth chart. He will still get his fair share of targets but the margin for error will be slim.

The fact that the Jags reportedly put Shenault in the trade block earlier this year might have revealed that they don’t see him as a part of their future. While this is the business part of football, the receiver could have felt blindsided by the organization’s position. On the bright side, Shenault recently posted a message on social media saying communication goes a long way.

It’s uncertain what the context of the post was and whether it was directed to the team but if it was, Shenault will have a legitimate chance to show that the best is yet to come.
