No. 3 player who could make the Jaguars roster: EJ Perry, QB

Quarterback wasn’t a need for the Jaguars after taking Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in last year’s draft and C.J. Beathard entrenched as the top backup. Speaking of Beathard, he recently suffered a groin injury in practice. Fortunately, he won’t need surgery and should return for training camp.

Had the veteran passer’s injury been more serious, Jake Luton might have become the No. 2 on the depth chart, which would have been less-than-optimal when you take into account that he made three starts as a rookie and lost of them. Sure, nearly two years have passed since then but the fact that he was released last year and spent time with several clubs before returning to Jacksonville doesn’t inspire confidence. And precisely because of that, undrafted free agent E.J. Perry might have a realistic shot to make the 53-man roster.

Of course, the Jaguars would have to either carry three quarterbacks into the season or Beathard would have to be out with injuries. But if the latter scenario happened, there’s a chance the Jags may be inclined to sign someone who is still available in the open market.

Having said that, the coaching staff might want to give Perry an extended look in training camp. The former Brown quarterback might not have top-notch arm strength and he struggles when facing pressure but he’s pretty mobile and has good accuracy. It’s uncertain if it will be enough to beat Luton in training camp but it wouldn’t be shocking if he does.
