4. Jaguars GM Trent Baalke isn’t going anywhere (for now).

Trent Baalke’s tenure as the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers didn’t finish the way he probably expected unless his goal was to get fired. If that’s the case, he got a heck of a happy ending but it’s unlikely that was his objective. Once Baalke got the boot, he went on to join the Jaguars as their director of player personnel, and in a stroke of luck, or a case of being in the right place at the right time, he got promoted to general manager, the position he currently holds.

This wasn’t a particularly popular decision and the Jaguars got plenty of flak for it. But instead of cutting ties with Baalke, they stood by him and allowed him to remain in place. This would be a sound decision if he had a spotless record as a talent evaluator and while he had a few hits in San Francisco, he also had plenty of misses. He also had a reputation for being difficult to work which is not the kind of character trait you one from one of your top decision-makers.

Even if you overlook Baalke’s character issues, his inability to draft playmakers is still a concern. Nevertheless, Jaguars owner Shad Khan believed he was the right man to conduct the team’s draft and there are no signs the organization plans to dismiss him anytime soon.

All things considered, Baalke had a good offseason and if the Jaguars manage to turn the corner, you will no longer hear reports about his potential dismissal. Similarly, he will be shown the door if he fails, which is expected in a result-oriented line of work.
