4) Mike Pettine

Past Positions: Cleveland Browns head coach, 2014-2015 (10-22 record); Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator, 2013; New York Jets defensive coordinator, 2009-2012

I’ll come right out and say it, Mike Pettine probably should have been given more time to develop as the Cleveland Browns head coach. That’s a dysfunctional organization to the nth degree and it’s unfortunate that he’s been ousted to early in his tenure. Winning 10 games in two seasons is practically a miracle for the Browns.

That said, what you get from Pettine is a (relatively short) track record for success. He worked in New York and Buffalo as the defensive coordinator and built up a couple strong units, especially under head coach Rex Ryan (who is known for the defensive side of the ball).

It would be a fit for Pettine to come over to Jacksonville and do a similar job under Bradley that he did under Ryan. He would able to do that while still not being a complete “yes-man” to Bradley like Babich was due to personal connections. It would be interesting to see what Pettine would be able to do with Bradley’s defense. Don’t expect a scheme departure if he’s there to essentially orchestrate what Bradley dictates.

Pettine will probably be looking for work and wouldn’t be tough to bring down to Jacksonville. He’d be worth at least a look.
