Jaguars Draft 2015: Does Amari Cooper Fit at Number 3?

facebooktwitterreddit

Jacksonville Jaguars draft selections seem centered around the pass rush position, mostly. Well, at least that’s what the average mock draft will tell you.

Erik Lambert at NFL Mocks went against the grain and gave the Jaguars a wide receiver at the third overall selection, having the team pickup Kevin White. Lambert had this to say about White and the Jaguars:

"Gus Bradley is a defensive maestro but his future as a head coach rests in the hands of Blake Bortles. The Jacksonville Jaguars have to arm their quarterback. That means giving him a size-speed freak like Kevin White to throw to."

I love that he’s thinking outside the box a bit and I love the Jaguars do seem to be hunting for a dependable receiver during free agency.

But I think Lambert may have had the Jaguars draft the wrong receiver. What about Amari Cooper?

Amari Cooper arranged a visit with the Jaguars, suggesting that at a minimum the team is interested. Will they like what they see? To me, it’s hard not to.

Cooper is coming out of Alabama where he has put up some incredibly impressive numbers, most notably in his junior season with 1727 yards and a whopping 124 receptions en route to putting up 16 touchdowns. The receptions are amazing here, catching 84 more passes than the next best receiver on the team. This is a player who knows how to be the highlight of the offense. He was recognized for his dominant season by winning the Biletnikoff award, which goes to the best receiver in college football.

What I prefer about Amari Cooper over Kevin White is that Cooper is less of a one year wonder. He put up big numbers his first year as well, hauling in 59 receptions for 1000 yards and 11 touchdowns. All three years at Alabama, he led the team in receptions.

The thought of pairing a do-it-all receiver like Cooper with Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee, Allen Hurns, and (hopefully) Justin Blackmon gets me almost giddy over how great the receiving corps for the Jaguars would be. If the Jaguars draft a receiver at three overall, I’m starting to hope it’s Amari Cooper that’s atop their list.
