Offense
Plus Guys
Brandon Linder: +1.9 Overall, +1.9 Pass Block, -0.2 Run Block
Marqise Lee: +1.2 Overall, +1.1 Pass
Josh Wells: +1.0 Overall, +1.1 Pass Block, +0.7 Run Block, -0.8 Penalty
After a horrific start on offense that was compounded by the Giants scoring 3 straight touchdowns on the other side of the ball, the Jaguars finally got something going near the end of the first half, and they had a big drive touchdown drive in the second half that helped spark the comeback. In what’s become an encouraging trend, Brandon Linder came out of this game with a positive grade, and there’s little reason to believe he won’t be the right guard for years to come. He’s improved as a pass blocker over the course of the season, and he’s been probably the only consistent run blocker on the line. The Jaguars had protection issues on Sunday, but Linder was not among the contributors to that problem. It was also nice to see Josh Wells step in at right tackle after the injury to Austin Pasztor and play well. He played 42 snaps and held his own, so it’ll be interesting to see if he’s in play at right tackle for the rest of the year.
With Allen Robinson out for the year, it was time for fellow second round pick Marqise Lee to have a big game, and it finally happened on Sunday. He caught 6 of the 7 balls thrown his way for 75 yards, and he showed great form in keeping his feet in bounds on the 30 yard touchdown pass. The Jaguars are finally starting to get Lee involved, and it should only help in finding big plays for this offense.
Minus Guys
Zane Beadles: -3.6 Overall, -1.6 Pass Block, -1.2 Run Block
Luke Bowanko: -3.1 Overall, -0.4 Pass Block, -2.8 Run Block
Denard Robinson: -2.9 Overall, -0.7 Pass, -0.6 Rush, -1.6 Pass Block
The Jaguars had major issues in pass protection on Sunday, as the Giants were able to amass 7 sacks, so it’s not surprising to see a couple of offensive lineman at the bottom of the grades. Beadles and Bowanko were credited with 1 sack and 3 combined QB hurries, but they also both graded out quite poorly in the run blocking department. Denard Robinson actually had a rough day as well, as he had his worst day pass blocking all season according to PFF. The issues along the offensive line appear to be more associated with communication than technique, so hopefully we’ll see incremental improvement over the last few games.
The real takeaway from this section is no Blake Bortles! With a +0.8 overall grade, Bortles finally got out of the bottom of the grades, and it’s well deserved. He was an integral part of setting up the Jaguars game-winning field goal.
