That dubious distinction helped the Giants manage to throw away a 21-0 lead and finished the day down 24-25 and looking at another “L” in the win/loss column.
Blake Bortles, on the other hand, has got to be ecstatic.
It didn’t take a boring game plan with training wheels for Bortles to play without tossing an interception. It didn’t take excellent offensive line play (quite the opposite, actually). Heck, he didn’t even have that great of a game (194 yards, 60% complete, one TD). He did, however, manage to show that he can drive for a win in the fourth quarter without messing up. He showed he can make sure the offense doesn’t start the team in a giant hole (those 21 points were all on the defense, honestly).
Blake Bortles showed that he can play mistake free football.
Would I like to see his completion percentage go up? Absolutely. Would I like to see him involve his wide receivers more? Definitely. Would I like to see him stop throwing into triple and even quadruple coverage? Just tell me where to sign.
But for now, I’ll settle for the rookie quarterback who didn’t turn the ball over, managed a game winning drive, and was able to make those around him succeed when it mattered most.
The offense has a long way to go before they can completely take control of games. They are still the defense’s kid brother on the team. Right now, though, it’s pretty obvious that progress is being made. Bortles is making some better decisions.
That said, I was still cringing every time he dropped back to pass on that final drive, hoping against history that he wouldn’t toss a pick and the Jaguars could just snag a victory. Thanks to the New York Giants and some improved play from Bortles, the Jaguars came away with the W.
