2015 NFL Draft: Jacksonville Jaguars At 2 Overall, a Recent History
By Luke Sims
If the season ended today, the Jacksonville Jaguars would own the second overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. Sadly, this is familiar territory for the Jaguars.
The last time the Jaguars selected second overall was in 2013, just over a year ago. The team went with a foundation piece in left tackle Luke Joeckel (who hasn’t managed to stay on the field a full season and has been mediocre to this point). The 2015 NFL Draft would be the fourth draft in a row with the Jaguars picking in the top five.

You have to look all the way back to 2011 to see the Jaguars leave the top five, shifting back to pick 10 after trading up from 16 to grab “quarterback of the future” Blaine Gabbert. The Jaguars held the seventh overall pick in 2012, but traded up to five to tap indefinitely-suspended wide receiver Justin Blackmon.
Needless to say, the top of the draft is familiar territory for the Jags. You have to go all the way back to 2007 to see the Jaguars select a player outside of the top 10. Since then, the Jaguars have gone through two general managers and two head coaches.
The 2015 NFL Draft will be the third draft for general manager Dave Caldwell and will hopefully bring in a crop of young players who will help the team become competitive in its third year of rebuilding. If the season ended today, this would be the third time draft in a row that Caldwell has owned a top-three draft pick, his second at number two overall.
One of the good things about doing poorly in the NFL is that you get high draft picks (yay, parity!) but eventually it would be nice to see the Jaguars not picking in the top 10. I’ll even settle for not picking in the top five at this point.
Hopefully the 2015 NFL Draft will be the last time this happens.
