NFL International Series: Jaguars Make London Home
By Luke Sims
The Jacksonville Jaguars will take on the Dallas Cowboys in London today. It’s the second game for the Jaguars in London, becoming a staple for those who are a fan of the NFL International Series. This will be the half way point for their four season agreement with the NFL to give up one home game a year to play in Wembley Stadium.
Next season the NFL International Series will feature the Jacksonville Jaguars vs the Buffalo Bills.
When the four season stretch was first announced many who cover the NFL thought it was an indication of the Jaguars possibly jumping ship from Jacksonville to be the NFL mainstay in London. Two years later and it’s obvious (as if it wasn’t before) that the Jaguars will be staying in Jacksonville. Owner Shad Khan has made commitments to the stadium and the community, making Jacksonville a stronger NFL market.
But London has become something of a second home.
One game down and another about to be played, the Jaguars continue their hold on a massive market. The Dallas Cowboys are America’s team but as the black and teal continue to play in London, the Jaguars may very well become England’s team.
Obviously losing a home game in Jacksonville isn’t great for season ticket holders. It may not be great for the ownership either, especially after investing so heavily in a pool, poolside cabanas, the world’s largest scoreboards, and driving fans to the seats. Yet growing the Jaguars brand is critical for a smaller market team like the Jaguars. While other teams jostle for viewers and fans with each other, the Jaguars are given first chance to establish a fan base in the UK.
So, while we all crave the Jaguars in Jacksonville, I will continue to support the Jags playing a game a year in London. Khan seems likely to keep with the plan as well.
The NFL International Series is here to stay. The Jaguars are the primary beneficiaries for the next few years. While there won’t ever be a “London Jaguars” we should continue to support this expansion of the brand and our fellow fans across the pond.
