The Jacksonville Jaguars James Sample’s lack of playing time makes him relatively unknown. Looking toward the 2017 season, will he take advantage of this opportunity?

Sample was a fourth round pick in the 2015 draft from Louisville. Ideally he was someone who could come in and compete for a starting safety job. Since joining the Jags Sample has yet to his display full range of talent.

Negatives

Headed into his third year, injuries have hampered the growth and development of the young safety. Looking to make the most of the offseason ,Sample looks to put together a full year.

Another sign that Sample could become expendable is how the Jaguars decided to move on from Jonathan Cyprien and signed Barry Church in free agency. That move should put Sample on notice that he needs to finally perform. In fact he could be competing for a roster spot this season.

Positives

However there are signs Sample can turn it around, going back to his college days. After playing sparingly his first two seasons at Louisville, Sample broke out his junior year. He secured four interceptions and seventy-four solo tackles. Sample’s Junior season at Louisville he saw tremendous growth. This also helps highlight his potential at the safety position.

Staying healthy is no doubt the main goal for Sample moving forward. Making the most of this offseason will help secure his role on the team. He has the ability to make impactful plays and now needs an opportunity to show his skills.

At the very least Sample will provide depth to the Jags strong safety position. His lack of playing experience makes him a positive unknown.

Finally, James Sample has the ability, talent, and opportunity to become a contributing members of the defense. His lack of playing time makes him a positive unknown who will hopefully be able to capitalize during the 2017 season.
