While the Jacksonville Jaguars have addressed most of their needs in some form this offseason, there are still questions about whether or not Blake Bortles will improve.

Heading into the offseason after a disheartening 2016 campaign, the Jacksonville Jaguars did not have a shortage of needs at key positions. With the departure of Jonathan Cyprien, Prince Amukamara, and Kelvin Beachum, the team had to find new (and potentially better) players to fill the strong safety, cornerback, and left tackle spots.

Tom Coughlin and the rest of his staff in the front office worked aggressively to address those needs, signing Barry Church, A.J. Bouye, and trading for Branden Albert. They even went ahead and beefed up the defensive line by snagging Calais Campbell away from the Denver Broncos.

So the Jaguars are certainly a more talented team heading into the draft in May, a fact that almost every analysts agrees with. One thing you’ll notice if you scour the web for takes from those same analysts about how the Jaguars did is this – it won’t matter at all if Blake Bortles doesn’t get better.

Most people have jumped off the Blake-train, but some of his (former) teammates still believe:

And one of his new teammates (and former teammate in college) thinks he’s focused this offseason and ready to make strides.

We haven’t heard much about Bortles this offseason, but we do know he has been back to California to work with Tom House’s group. No news is usually good news, but this short clip from the 3DQB training camp shows off Bortles refined, quicker release.

Obviously this is all lip-service for the time being. Bortles worked tirelessly after his rookie season to speed up his release and hone his footwork, work which paid dividends in the form of franchise records for passing yards and passing TDs in 2015. He regressed last year, so now it’s on him to make sure his shortcomings don’t hold back what could be a stacked team in 2017.

So far so good.
