Trevor Lawrence uses Jaguars joint practice to put NFL doubters on notice

It's not how you start, but how you finish. That was most definitely the case for Trevor Lawrence when the Jacksonville Jaguars visited the New Orleans Saints for a joint practice before their Week 1 preseason bout.

Although Lawrence was picked off early, he wasted no time bouncing back, throwing three touchdown passes at the end of the practice.

While you shouldn't overlook his interception, it's clear that Lawrence should have no trouble picking up where he left off last year.

The Jaguars joint practice confirms Trevor Lawrence is ready to make noise

Things didn't look great for the Jaguars early in the joint practice. Trevor Lawrence was picked off by Julian Blackmon, and Travis Hunter gave up a touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Olave. However. No. 16 took control of the situation once he hit his stride.

During the red zone period, Lawrence found wide receiver Jakobi Meyers twice and Brian Thomas Jr. once for touchdowns. Understandably, the sixth-year quarterback was pumping his fist in the aftermath, according to Brent Martineau of Action News Jax. But wait, there's more!

Near the end of practice, Lawrence also connected with tight end Nate Boerkircher for a touchdown, giving him a total of four for the day. Although he didn't throw a touchdown pass to Hunter, he did complete a few throws to him.

For his part, head coach Liam Coen was pleased with Lawrence's performance, stating that he played well once he settled.

There appear to be mixed opinions about Trevor Lawrence going into 2026. On the one hand, plenty of analysts believe he's become more consistent under Liam Coen. On the other hand, critics believe the former Clemson Tiger is who he is at this point of his career: A streaky quarterback who's dealt with lots of ups and downs throughout his career.

While it's true that Lawrence has been inconsistent at times, he hasn't always had his team's support or appropriate coaching. When he's had both, the sixth-year passer has proven that he can play at an absurdly high level. And fortunately for him, he currently has a great supporting cast and a pretty good head coach in Coen.

Unlike the past two years, Lawrence didn't have to rehab injuries in the offseason, so he was able to fully focus on mastering Coen's scheme, the most complex he's had to learn in his career. With a stronger grasp, he'll be able to keep making strides.

Moreover, Lawrence spent the offseason and training camp honing his rapport with Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr., Travis Hunter, and Parker Washington. The work has been evident when he's successfully dialed up deep shots.

Of course, Trevor Lawrence must keep working, but the results are on full display in the joint practice against the Saints. If the NFL isn't paying attention yet, it should soon. Otherwise, he's going to catch lots of people by surprise.
