The Jacksonville Jaguars have completed a successful turnaround. Just one season after going 4-14, they won 13 games and won the AFC South. Head coach Liam Coen has most definitely played a huge role in steering the ship in the right direction, but he may not have been able to pull it off if Trevor Lawrence weren't his quarterback.
Although Lawrence got off to an inconsistent start to the 2025 season, he eventually flipped the proverbial switch and went on to play like a top-10 quarterback after Jacksonville's BYE in Week 8. Coen, for his part, believes that the former Clemson Tiger did more than enough to earn MVP consideration.
Liam Coen throws his support behind Trevor Lawrence after a banner season
One day after the win over the Tennessee Titans, Liam Coen threw his support behind Trevor Lawrence, noting that he won games and routinely elevated his teammates.
I think so, right?" Coen told reporters the day after the Titans game (5:12 mark). "I mean, you're judged as a quarterback by what your team's record, by winning and losing, by how much you elevate the team, and ultimately, by what you do in the playoffs, right? So much of that gets, I think, resolved around this time. And the best rise, right, the best rise and the best elevate the people around him. And I think he's continued to do that down this stretch, right?"
Coen continued, "Like so many different names were thrown around for MVP within the first eight games of the season, and some of those teams aren't in the playoffs. So it's like, how can that be? You definitely, great, every season does this for so many different teams, different players. It's just the way it goes. And there's so many good players in this league, and some guys get hot early, and then some guys get hot later, and it's really what you do in January that matters."
In case you were wondering why Lawrence deserves consideration, he certainly has the wins and production to back up his case. Aside from playing a big role in Jacksonville winning 13 games, No. 16 completed 60.9 percent of his throws for 4,007 yards with 29 passing touchdowns and 12 interceptions. On top of that, he had nine rushing touchdowns.
This was the third 4,000-yard season of Lawrence's career, and his 39 combined touchowns set a new team record for the most in a year.
With 255 passing yards today, @trevorlawrence has surpassed 4,000 passing yards (4,007) in a season for the third time in the last four seasons. His three 4,000-yard seasons since 2022 are the second most in the NFL in that span. pic.twitter.com/0JXy5CR6dt

Why Trevor Lawrence may ultimately won't win the MVP award
As much as Trevor Lawrence deserves to win the MVP award, he's a dark horse candidate behind Matthew Stafford and Drake Maye. Granted, Stafford's candidacy cooled down a bit in the second half of the season, while Maye faced the easiest schedule in the NFL. Nevertheless, the fact that they were the early favorites could give them a massive edge.
It's also worth noting that Matthew Stafford has more total touchdowns (46) than both Maye and Lawrence, and that could end up solidifying his case.
Ultimately, it may not matter if Trevor Lawrence comes up short. As long as he keeps playing at a high level, the Jaguars won't mind. In fact, they could use that as a rallying cry to go all the way.
