Since the end of the 2024 season, Trevor Lawrence has been under scrutiny, and rightly so. He's not the main reason the Jacksonville Jaguars failed to make the playoffs in back-to-back years, but he wasn't the solution either. The good news is that the Jags have done as much as they can to put him in a position to succeed.
Aside from making upgrades to his supporting cast, Jacksonville got Lawrence a coach that's worked one-on-one with him to hone his skills. Of course, he must also do his part, and it all would be moot if No. 16 didn't take advantage of all the help the organization is giving him. Unfortunately, that's not the case.
Lawrence has made strides in both training camp and the preseason. Just recently, he talked about the area where he's had the most growth.
Trevor Lawrence's mechanics and communication with the Jaguars offense have improved
A couple days after the cutdown deadline, Trevor Lawrence met with the local media and said that he put an emphasis on his footwork during the offseason, pointing out that the offense as a whole has gotten much better.
I think there's a lot of things with my footwork that I wanted to work on. I've seen some growth with that. That's still something, like I've said since the beginning, you got to continue to work every day. That's big part of it," Lawrence responded when asked where he's improved the most dating back to the spring (20:11 mark). "I think just my eyes, progressions, really mastering the offense, as far as all the checks, all the protection changes."
Lawrence continued, "I really like the growth that we've honestly had since the spring. And not just myself, but the group, because it takes all 11 of us. It's the group up front. It's me, it's the back, especially in protections. If I know it but I can't communicate it, it doesn't do any good."
Lawrence is entering his first year in Liam Coen's system. Throughout the offseason, the duo focused on honing his mechanics and doing a better job of going through his progressions.
The Jaguars' investment in Trevor Lawrence is paying off
The Jaguars gave Trevor Lawrence a massive extension in 2024 because they believe he's the long-term answer behind center. That said, the past regime often failed to help him, which led him to put the team on his shoulder more often than he would've liked.
To nobody's surprise, the Jags cleaned house after a pair of underwhelming seasons. They then hired James Gladstone and Liam Coen to get the most out of their franchise quarterback. The head coach-general manager duo has done precisely that, bolstering his supporting cast and giving him the best coaching possible.
Now, Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars are a few days away from facing the Carolina Panthers in the season opener. Based on how things have unfolded the past few months, he should have no trouble coming through and showcasing all the work he put in during the offseason.
