After Travis Hunter suffered a season-ending injury in 2025, questions surfaced about whether he could truly play two-ways in the NFL. But despite the skepticism, the Jacksonville Jaguars made it clear that they wouldn't limit the former Heisman Trophy winner to just one side of the football. It's quickly turning out to be the right call.
Hunter is already back at full strength and has wasted no time showing that playing two-ways in the NFL is feasible. His strong outing on Day 10 of training camp is proof of it.
Travis Hunter is showcasing his two-way skills at Jaguars training camp
John Shipley of Sports Illustrated reported that Travis Hunter reeled in a touchdown pass over cornerback Jabbar Muhammad on Day 10 of training camp. On top of that, he picked off Trevor Lawrence when he went against wide receiver Parker Washington.
Now, this isn't the first time Hunter has made plays in training camp or the offseason, but he's shown that he can make an impact on both sides of the ball. Along the way, he's showing that the knee injury is in the rearview mirror, as the Jags aren't limiting him.
This is encouraging when you take into account that there was a chance that Hunter wouldn't be a full go to start training camp, but he is. Moreover, the West Palm Beach, Florida native added around 10 pounds of muscle, so he should be better suited to deal with the challenges of playing two ways.
Travis Hunter will have make an impact for the Jaguars on offense and defense
Travis Hunter will play cornerback full-time next season, but this doesn't mean the Jaguars will abandon the two-way. Michael DiRocco of ESPN has kept track of his usage through training camp. After 10 days, the former Colorado Buffalo has logged 143 total snaps (88 on defense and 55 on offense). That could be indicative of how Jacksonville plans to use him next season.
Keep in mind that even though Hunter will tentatively have a part-time role at receiver, he may come off the field from time to time on defense. The Jags' depth at cornerback will allow it. Jabbar Muhammad, Jarrian Jones, or Jourdan Lewis could sub in for him to let him catch his breath. Similarly, Jacksonville doesn't need him to play every offensive snap.
With Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, and Parker Washington in the mix, Hunter will probably be the No. 4 on the totem pole. The Jags could deploy him when they find favorable matchups. But even with a reduced role on offense, No. 12 should still put up better numbers than last year. After all, he was making the transition to the NFL while playing two positions. Having taken care of that, he can fully focus on being the best player he can be next season.
When you add it all up, the Jaguars are setting up Travis Hunter to be the game-changer they expected when they drafted him second overall in 2025.
