The Jacksonville Jaguars made the costly trade to move up to the No. 2 pick and select Travis Hunter because they believe he’s a generational sensation that can change the franchise. Many people considered Hunter as the best wide receiver and the best cornerback in the draft, and Jacksonville is actually bold enough to let him play on both sides of the ball. However, Hunter still is just one person, so his time has to be split between offensive and defensive practices.

During his early days with the Jaguars, the majority of his time was spent on the offensive side of the ball—Jacksonville admitted it would be that way. However, in recent days, Hunter has spent time on the defensive side of the ball, and his natural and instinctive movements at defensive back have everyone excited. They also have the defensive staff asking for more time with the young talent.

Jaguars head coach Liam Coen, who is an offensive guy, recently revealed that Jacksonville’s secondary coach Ron Milus approached him after Tuesday’s practice and asked if the defense could have Travis Hunter more. Coen shared the story with a humorous tone, so there isn’t any real war over Hunter going on yet, but the team will definitely need to figure out how to best split his time as the season approaches.

Jaguars’ defensive coaches want more of Travis Hunter in practice

With the time Hunter did spend on the defensive side of the ball, he certainly impressed. Coen explained that the young corner’s movement skills in man coverage and feel in zone coverage all looks extremely natural for Hunter. Of course, he’s still a rookie learning an NFL defense, and offense, but Coen said he doesn’t look out of place at all.

Still, no one knows what an actual regular season game is going to look like for the second-overall pick. Hunter, and the people closest to him, maintain that he can play the full game both ways just like he did at Colorado. If he can, that would certainly make the coaching staff happy, but he has to prove he’s capable of doing so at the NFL level.
