This Jaguars veteran's camp reps are starting to feel like something bigger

• The RB1 job is up for grabs, and Tank Bigsby is being given a favorable chance to seize it.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a "burden of choice" kind of thing at running back and will need to sort it out in training camp. They currently have three players vying for the top spot on the depth chart, and all three have a realistic chance to seize it. Tank Bigsby, Bhayshul Tuten, and Tank Bigsby bring something to the table.

It's hard to tell how things will play out and the depth chart will look come Week 1, but Bigsby's certainly building a promising case. The former Auburn Tiger has been getting a lot of reps in training camp and led all running backs in carries by a wide margin on Day 2.

Alessandra Pontbriand of News4Jax tallied every Jaguars player on offense and had Bigsby logging five, whereas Etienne and Tutel had three and two, respectively. Now, it's possible that the coaching staff will split reps in a different way in the upcoming days, but it's notable that one of the three is already getting a bigger workload.

When asked about Bigsby, head coach Liam Coen has done a good job so far.

"Yeah, I think the last few days, he's continuing to get used to the runs, right? Just getting used to the flow of those runs, what's the intent of those runs." Coen responded when asked what his impression of Bigsby has been (6:36 mark). "I thought he did a nice job over the last few days of making good second-level cuts and getting vertical. So I've been pleased with him so far."

A third-round pick in 2023, Bigsby was a non-factor as a rookie but showed notable improvement last year, toting the rock 168 times for a team-best 766 rushing yards with seven touchdowns. What's more impressive about his breakthrough is that he was playing behind an underwhelming offensive line that struggled to open lanes.

Expected to compete for the top spot in the backfield, Bigsby now finds himself in a three-way battle with Etienne and Tuten, one Benjamin Solak of ESPN dubbed the most compelling to watch for the Jags in training camp.

Tank Bigsby can be RB1 for the Jaguars won't it won't be easy

Tank Bigsby showed the capability to break off big runs as a sophomore. However, he faces stiff competition to seize the starting job. Before sustaining a shoulder injury in 2024, Travis Etienne posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Similarly, Bhayshul Tuten has showcased in training camp the top-notch speed that made him a staple of the Hokies offense at college.

This is a long-winded way to say that Bigsby has a legitimate chance to be the top option on the Jaguars' backfield in 2025, but there's a chance he won't because of how stacked Jacksonville at the position.

Perhaps the picture will become clearer if the team's brass places Etienne on the trade block at some point before the regular season. But so far, there are no signs that they will.

In the end, Tank Bigsby will need to make the most of his chances if he wants to have an edge but will need to constantly look over his shoulder because Bhayshul Tuten and Travis Etienne won't go down easily.
