Before the 2025 season began, the Jacksonville Jaguars realized that they needed a boost at receiver, so they acquired Tim Patrick from the Detroit Lions in return for a 2026 sixth-round selection. All things considered, that was a fair price to pay to take care of a need.
While Patrick's numbers didn't pop off the stat sheet, he most definitely gave Trevor Lawrence a massive target (he's 6'5") to work with. Then, free agency came, and the Jags let him walk. The veteran wideout remains unsigned, as of this writing, so maybe Jacksonville should consider giving him a call and bringing him back.
How did Tim Patrick ended up with the Jaguars
Before the Jags traded for Tim Patrick, the upper half of their receiver depth chart was set, with Travis Hunter, Brian Thomas Jr., Dyami Brown, and Parker Washington at the top. However, they weren't confident about their options for the fifth spot. The team's brass had signed Trenton Irwin in the offseason, but he failed to stand out.
Austin Trammell and Joshua Cephus were also in the mix, but neither inspired enough confidence, so Jacksonville ended up trading for Patrick. At the time, he was coming off a bounce-back campaign in Detroit, having reeled in 33 receptions for 394 yards with three touchdowns in 2024. While this kind of production isn't particularly surprising at first sight, it's noteworthy because the San Diego, California native had missed each of the prior two years with season-ending injuries.
Nevertheless, Patrick was part of a crowded receiver room with the Lions, so they felt comfortable moving on from him. In Jacksonville, though, he was a welcome addition to a group that lacked depth.

Why re-signing Tim Patrick makes sense for the Jaguars
Travis Hunter, Parker Washington, and Brian Thomas Jr. are still around, but the Jaguars also added Jakobi Meyers to the mix at the trade deadline. The four of them give Jacksonville a well-rounded group, but there's not much depth beyond them. That's where re-signing Tim Patrick would come in handy.
With Patrick in the fold, the Jags could allocate their early draft picks to address more pressing needs. Sure, they could add a receiver in the later round, but it would no longer be a priority. On top of that, the former Utah Ute would get to spend a full offseason in Jacksonville, which would put him in a position to be even more productive in 2026.
The Jaguars may want to wait to see how the draft unfolds before they decide to sign a veteran player, but that shouldn't deter them from bringing Tim Patrick back. He could compete for a job in the offseason, and if he's not up to the challenge, they can simply move on. Either way, it would be a low-risk move that could end up paying dividends down the road.
