Once again, James Gladstone has shown that he isn't afraid to swing for the fences to improve the Jacksonville Jaguars. Just weeks after acquiring defensive tackle Khalen Saunders, the first-year manager once again made a trade to bolster a position of need.

Just one day after announcing the initial 53-man roster, Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reported that the Jags got a deal done with the Detroit Lions for wide receiver Tim Patrick. Not long after, Mark Long of the Associated Press announced that Jacksonville gave up a sixth-round selection in 2026 in return for the former Utah Ute.

An undrafted free agent in 2017, Patrick spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Denver Broncos later that year. He proceeded to play four seasons in Mile High, hauling in 143 receptions for 2,009 yards with 12 touchdowns.

With Patrick in the fold, the Jaguars have rounded out their wide receiver corps. And with that in mind, here are the biggest winners and losers from the trade.

Jaguars winners: Liam Coen, head coach

After failing to consistently set the running game in past years, the Jaguars will put a renewed emphasis on toting the rock under head coach Liam Coen. In fact, that's one of the many reasons they released tight end Evan Engram and brought in tight ends who can block.

Leaving aside Tim Patrick's pass-catching abilities, he's a heck of a run-blocker, as Dan Griffis of Action News Jax pointed out. That will come in handy when Jacksonville attempts to run the ball.

Patrick was the 11th-best run blocker among wide receivers last year. So he even if he isn't targeted, the Jags will try to keep him on the field.

Jaguars loser: Austin Trammell, wide receiver

The Jaguars chose Austin Trammell over Trent Irwin, and understandably so. The former was more consistent in training camp, while the latter failed to make an impression. And after spending most of the 2024 season in the Jags practice squad, Trammell should be hyped up that he made their initial 53-man roster. That said, the arrival of Tim Patrick doesn't bode well for him.

Patrick is a more accomplished receiver than Trammell, and he will probably get more playing time because he's more well-rounded.

If Trammell stick on the roster next season, don't be surprised if he turns out to be a healthy scratch more than once.

Jaguars winners: Trevor Lawrence, quarterback

The Jaguars spared no expense to bolster Trevor Lawrence's arsenal in the offseason, adding Travis Hunter and Dyami Brown to a wide receiver corps that already included budding star Brian Thomas Jr. All No. 16 was missing was a big target, and he got it when Jacksonville traded for Tim Patrick.

At 6'5", Patrick has a massive frame and gives Lawrence a great target in the red zone. Before trading for him, the Jags lacked size at receiver. That's no longer the case.

Jaguars loser: Whoever gets cut to make room for Tim Patrick

Update: Austin Trammell ended up getting cut to make room for Tim Patrick

Making the initial 53-man roster is a feat worth recognizing, but that's just the beginning for several players unless you're a household name. More often than not, you can still get the boot after cutdown day and before Week 1 of the regular season. That will be the case for whoever the Jags release to free up a spot for Tim Patrick.

As of this writing, they haven't announced a move, but it's matter of time before they do.
