Sophomore Rayuan Lane III made a game-defining play in his second career start, picking Daniel Jones off and taking it to the house just before halftime. The play effectively stalled whatever momentum the Indianapolis Colts had built at that point and ended up playing a big role in the 42-7 win. Unfortunately, the Jacksonville Jaguars also lost fellow safety Eric Murray to an elbow injury on the opening kickoff.
With head coach Liam Coen confirming that Murray is out for the year, the Jags will need Lane to keep making game-changing plays.
The Jaguars need Rayuan Lane III more than ever
Following the win over Indy, Liam Coen heaped praise on Rayuan Lane III. One day later, he talked about just how valuable the second-year safety was beyond his touchdown return.
"Rayuan Lane arguably played one of his best games as a Jaguar. The takeaway, even the interception pick-six, was a phenomenal play and all, but his communication throughout the game, getting us, helping with checks, getting us in and out of things," Coen told reporters (9:55 mark). "He had this almost strip sack, the strip that we ended up challenging as well at the end of the game. And so, those are critical, right? Those plays are so critical, and that experience is so critical."
Lane made his first career start against the Philadelphia Eagles, with Eric Murray in concussion protocol. With him out of the picture, he'll remain in the starting lineup the remainder of the year.
A fourth-round pick in 2025, Lane carved out a niche on special teams as a rookie but also flashed potential as a backup on defense. He once again showcased his playmaking skills against the Colts and will have a golden opportunity to prove that he deserves to start beyond 2026.
Keep in mind that Antonio Johnson is set to become a free agent in 2027, and Murray could be a cap casualty. If Lane shows out, Jacksonville may feel comfortable moving on from Johnson or Murray (or both).
For the time being, Lane will need to hold the fort in light of injuries to both of Johnson and Lane.

The Jaguars will also need Kaevon Merriweather and Jalen Huskey to step up
Before Week 8, Jalen Huskey had been a healthy scratch every game but one. He'll have a prime opportunity to earn a role on defense. His sack against the Colts was definitely a good start.
Similarly, Kaevon Merriweather will need to step up. He was on the practice squad to begin the year but was signed to the 53-man roster in October. The former Iowa Hawkeye is coming off his first start and will make the second one against the Baltimore Ravens (if Antonio Johnson isn't good to go) on Thursday Night Football. Like Huskey, Merriweather will have an opportunity to keep building his stock.
Ideally, Rayuan Lane III, Kaevon Merriweather, and Jalen Huskey would be thrust into action in better circumstances, but with the Jaguars dealing with injuries at safety, they'll need all three to come through.
