The Jacksonville Jaguars have spent the last few weeks preparing to welcome the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Preseason. While the game won't count in the standings, it will be the first taste of football Jags fans will have in months. Also, it's not precisely meaningless.

The matchup will help Jacksonville assess its talent, sort out its roster, and scout the Chiefs' sidelines for any potential waiver-wire pickups. Head coach Doug Pederson, for his part, isn't concerned about winning or losing. Rather, he wants to see sharp executions from his players.

"Yeah, not gaging it based off of that," Pederson said on Day 13 of training camp when asked if he was eager to go against the defending champion Chiefs. "But at the same time, I want to see execution. I want to see guys playing hard and fast and just doing what we've done for the first two weeks of camp. In the preseason, the outcome, everybody wants to win the games, right?"

Pederson continued, "That's the bottom line, but I think it's more still about evaluating your roster, especially when you get past your so-called starters, but with the first group going against another first group, yeah. You want to see execution, very few mistakes because you're running your training camp plays, so that way, things can be simple. And again, you're not game planning. Anybody
going out and doing your job."

Already, Pederson said starters will be playing one or two series before they pave the way for the second team. Trevor Lawrence on the other hand, is thrilled to be back on the field after dealing with injuries to end 2023.

"Anytime you have an opportunity out there and play, they're keeping score, and I'm not wearing a red jersey, I think there's little extra on it. You want to play well, and you want to perform, and you want to win. That's the bottom line Preseason game, whatever, you still want to win, and it's a good challenge for us. They're going to play their guys too, so it'll be a good challenge for us and see how we stack up early."

"Obviously, this is it's preseason One. There's a long ways to go before Week 1, but I think it is important to test yourself against the team that has been the standard the past few years. Shouldn't take it lightly. This is a preseason game, but they're keeping score, you want to win it. That's the mindset, and Coach just mentioned that after practice. So we understand what we want to do, and what the goal is."
