It took the Jacksonville Jaguars several games but they were able to at last get their first win of the season when they beat the Indianapolis Colts in Week 5. While kicker Cam Little sealed the deal with a last-minute field goal, it wouldn't have been possible without Trevor Lawrence's impressive play.

Lawrence has gotten lots of flak this season and rightly so. However, he reminded everyone how good he is during the win against Indy by going 28-of-34 for 371 yards with two touchdowns and one pick. His deep completion to Brain Thomas Jr. for an 85-yard touchdown was one of his plays that stood out the most.

This was by far, his best performance of the season. It helped that the offensive line held its own for most of the game, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work with for most of the game.

Sure, you can make the case that the Colts were without defensive end Kwity Paye. Similarly, Deforest Bucker has been on the Injured Reserve, so their defensive front wasn't at full strength. That said, the Jags deserve credit for taking advantage of the matchup, especially because they didn't give up a single sack. In turn, Lawrence rewarded them with an encouraging performance.

The game prior, Lawrence completed 54.5 percent of his throws for 169 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. However, his 53.3 percent completion rate four weeks into the year is the worst of his career. Similarly, he had only crossed the 200-yard mark once this season until Week 5.

But as good as Lawrence was, he wouldn't have done it without Brian Thomas Jr., who played like a seasoned veteran en route to five catches for 122 yards with one touchdown.

Tank Bigby also contributed, playing in a way reminiscent of Fred Taylor in his prime on his way to this first 100-yard game ever in the NFL.

Trevor Lawrence must build off of the Colts game to help the Jaguars turn things around

There are several reasons the Jacksonville Jaguars got off to a rough start to the season, Lawrence was one of them. While he's been the reason they had a chance, to begin with, the previous two years, he's made several mistakes that have played a role in the team's 0-4 record before its Week 5 win.

More often than not, Lawrence was accurate and showed poise in previous seasons. However, he's looked hesitant at times in 2024. Granted, his offensive line hasn't always provided him great protection, but even when he's had enough time to throw, he'll leave the pocket. That's on him.

On the other hand, Lawrence looked like his old-self in the win over Indy. Besides crediting his offensive line for keeping him upright, he told the local media that the win is a huge confidence booster.

"It's always good to use these games to build confidence. Honestly, it does. It gives you confidence moving forward for myself and for the team," Lawrence said. Just even the way the game went we were in control, and then it got kind of crazy at the end. It was good for us to continue to deal with the adversity and to find a way to finish when things didn't go perfect. The end of the game didn't go perfect, but we found a way to get the ball in position and have a shot for a game-winning field goal, and Cam made it."

Lawrence continued, "That's going to make us better as a team too, that it was even the first win of the season, it was tough, and it came down to the very end, and we had to earn it. All that is going to build confidence moving forward. I think that's what this team's done a good job of, obviously a rough start, but we've kept our confidence."

"We've kept swinging, and like we said last week, we missed a couple punches last week and had some opportunities, but we knew if we just kept plugging away, we hit some, so I think that's what it is. It's no special and crazy formula, it's just continuing to do your job and trust the guys next to you. [We] got some momentum now, and we got to take it around with it and just try to go get one more this week."

The Jaguars no longer have to worry about earning their first win of the year. But if Trevor Lawrence keeps playing the way he did against the Colts, many more will come.
