After the Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Houston Texans in Week 4, a report surfaced that head coach Doug Pederson had lost the locker. He quickly offered a rebuttal and several players stood behind him. However, a talking head provided an insightful observation about the situation.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk talked with former NFL player Devin McCourty about Pederson's job security and whether he had lost the locker room.

Florio argues that Pederson will get the boot if he doesn't turn things around and points out that a head coach would never outright accept publicly that he lost the locker room.

"First of all, I don't know that Doug Peterson's ever going to admit it, like what head coach would ever say, 'Yeah, you know what? I don't know why I'm here. I don't know why they haven't fired me. I've completely lost the locker room'."

McCourty then chimes in and says that Pederson should've responded differently when he was asked if he would consider taking back playcalling duty from offensive coordinator Press Taylor.

"You have to always, to me, have some kind of response that you know is going to be your go-to and the questions that you're going to get asked. You know you lost a tough game. You know questions about your job are going to start coming out and different things. You got to have a planned answer, what you're going to go with, reevaluate it, get your thoughts together."

McCourty continued, "Come back Monday. When you do your interview, you do your next presser, you have a better handle. Because when you say things like this as a player, right away, you think as soon as you hear that, you think of all the coaching mistakes you've had, all the coaching mistakes in the game jump to your mind right away, even though you had to make some mistakes as players, that's what you're doing now. You create an atmosphere that is brutal."

Then, McCourty makes what was arguably the best observation about the situation, noting that Pederson wouldn't know if he had lost the locker room.

"I will say, did he lose a locker room? When coaches lose a locker room, they don't know they lost the locker room. How they know? They don't know if they lost the locker room or not. So, of course, he still thinks he has a locker room. They don't know when they lose it."

Pederson's job security has been a hot topic of discussion in light of the Jaguars' 0-4 start this season. Similarly, the subject of who calls offensive plays has come up often, but that's because the head coach hadn't revealed who held the responsibility until he was pressed after the loss to the Texans. Here's the full exchange between McCourty and Florio.

The Jaguars and Doug Pederson aren't throwing in the towel yet

From an outside perspective, it's hard to tell if Doug Pederson has lost the locker room. Not long after he denied it, Trevor Lawrence and other prominent players came to bat for him.

Whether he still has the locker room or not, Pederson's seat will only get hotter if he doesn't turn things around quickly. Working in his favor is that he'll no longer have to conceal who's calling plays on offense after conceding it's Press Taylor.

Moreover, the Jags will have a favorable matchup in Week 5 and a chance to earn their first win of the season. Leaving aside that they're playing at home, the Indianapolis Colts have already ruled out running back Jonathan Taylor and other key contributors.

As Pederson noted during an exchange with the local media ahead of the divisional bout, all it takes is one play to turn things around. If the Jacksonville Jaguars can build up a head of steam, maybe they can steer the ship in the right direction.
