The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a hard time containing the Indianapolis Colts' defensive front in the 2023 season opener. Things could become considerably more difficult after losing right guard Brandon Scherff to a right leg injury.

During an incomplete pass in the third quarter, the right guard was down on the ground. He was attended by the medical staff and later taken to the sidelines. Not long after, he was carted off the field. Kainani Stevens of the team's official website then reported that Scherff was questionable to return with an ankle injury.

This could be a big blow for the Jaguars. They were already having trouble containing Indy's front four and Scherff's departure will further complicate things. Given the questionable label and the fact that the game has less than two quarters left, it's hard to see Scherff returning today.

Update No. 2: Scherff is out once again

The Jaguars are barely beating the Colts in Week 1

As of this writing, the Jags are up 17-14 and the margin is narrow because they haven't been able to get anything going on offense in the second half. Similarly, they haven't been able to contain rookie Anthony Richardson, who's been generally efficient throughout the game. At this rate, they could lose if they don't put it all together.

On paper, the Jaguars are supposed to be the better team but that's not reflected on the scoreboard or the play on the field. The good news is that there still is plenty of time and things could click in the next couple drives. Conversely, Jacksonville can't afford to get sloppy. So far, they've had success throwing the ball to wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who's already got seven receptions for 92 yards. Maybe they should stick to that formula.

In regards to Scherff, it's hard to tell how serious the injury is. Head coach Doug Pederson will most likely provide an update after the game.
