Jaguars KR Devin Duvernay showing dual-threat capability with diving TD Vs. Chiefs
The Jacksonville Jaguars let returns specialist Jamal Agnew walk in free agency. Although he provided a spark early in his stint in Duval, injuries robbed him of his big-play capability in 2023. To fill the void left by his departure, the front office signed Devin Duvernay in the open market. The 2021 All-Pro nod is giving the Jags plenty of bang for their buck, scoring a diving touchdown against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1 of the 2024 NFL Preseason.
Duvernay was brought in because of his impact on special teams. In fact, he earned two Pro Bowl designations as a returner, but he was low-key a solid pass-catcher during his four-year stint with the Ravens. From 2021-2022, he hauled in 70 receptions for 679 yards with five touchdowns. Although he only had four receptions last season, he showed against the Chiefs that he can moonlight as a receiver if needed.
With 33 seconds left in the first half of the preseason opener, quarterback C.J. Beathard connected with Duvernay for a 35-yard touchdown to put the Jags ahead 16-10. Kicker Cam Little then nailed the extra point attempt to make it 17-10. Leaving aside that the reception gave Jacksonville six points, it stood out because the former Texas Longhorn dived to secure it. Here's the play in case you haven't seen it.
A third-round pick by the Ravens in 2020, Duvernay routinely turned heads because of his big-play capability in kickoff and punt returns. Once he became a free agent, the Jags made him a priority signing, giving him a two-year contract worth $8.5 million.
Devin Duvernay is one of many Jaguars who've stood up vs. the Chiefs
Devin Duvernay is far from the only Jaguar who's made plays against the Chiefs in the preseason opener. Parker Washington had a 73-yard return early in the first half, and sophomore running back Tank Bigsby later broke another long one late in the second quarter.
On offense, Brian Thomas Jr. reeled in a 41-yard reception, and Trevor Lawrence went 3-of-4 for 42 yards with one touchdown in limited action. On top of that, the defense held the Chiefs offense to just 10 points in the first half.
During halftime, head coach Doug Pederson said that he was pleased the team was playing fast and aggressively. Based not only on the score but on the number of big plays the Jaguars have made so far, it's hard to disagree with him. That said, they must keep their foot on the gas pedal. Even if they lose to the Chiefs, players, especially those looking to secure a roster spot or move up the depth chart, must execute.
