After reducing their rosters to 53-man players on cutdown day, teams began assembling their practice squads. The Jacksonville Jaguars got to work right away and already got theirs done.

One day after putting together their initial 53-man roster, the Jags announced their practice squad on their official public relations account on Twitter. Here are the players that will compose it.

  • Shawn Bowman, TE
  • Christian Braswell, CB
  • Joshua Cephus, WR
  • D.j. Coleman, DE
  • Elijah Cooks, WR
  • Josiah Deguara, TE
  • Terrell Edmunds, DB
  • Tre Flowers, CB
  • Tanner Muse, LB
  • Jalen Jackson, RB
  • Joe Gaziano, DE
  • Steven Jones, OL
  • E.J. Perry, QB
  • Austin Trammell, WR

No signing was particularly surprising. Instead of looking for outside options to build their practice roster, the Jags leaned on players they were familiar with.

Terrell Edmunds, Joshua Cephus & EJ Perry are key pieces in the Jaguars' practice squad

Of the bunch, Terrell Edmunds probably stands out the most. A first-round pick in 2018, he spent his first five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Virginia Tech Hokie then played for both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Tennessee Titans in 2023.

Edmunds signed with the Jaguars in May and went on to have a productive training camp. He turned heads in the preseason opener, earning Player of the Week honors from Pro Football Focus. The Virginia native seemed to have a favorable chance of earning a roster spot because veteran Andrew Wingard will start the season on injured reserve. At least, Jacksonville was able to get him back in the practice squad.

Fan favorite Joshua Cephus didn't make the team but is back on the roster spot. While the former UTSA Roadrunner flashed in the offseason, he was underwhelming in the preseason. The fact that he cannot contribute on special teams didn't help his case. In the practice squad, he'll continue to hone his skills. Fellow receiver Elijah Cooks made the roster last year but wasn't as fortunate in 2024. Austin Trammell will join them in the practice squad.

E.J. Perry signed with the Jaguars after quarterback C.J. Beathard suffered a groin injury in the preseason. This is the third time in as many years that the Brown product has landed in the practice squad.

Cornerback Christian Braswell, a sixth-round pick in last year's draft, missed time as a rookie because of injuries. However, he showed improvement in the offseason. This is why his departure came as a bit of a surprise. But by bringing him back, the team's brass will continue to develop the Rutgers product.

Offensive linemen Steven Jones and running back Jalen Jackson were undrafted free agents. Both of them flashed at different points but not nearly enough to seize a roster spot. Jones, in particular, was hampered by an injury that forced him to miss crucial time in training camp.

The Jaguars are only carrying three tight ends in 2024. If any of them go down, they can lean on Josiah Deguara. The former Green Bay Packer is a reliable blocker who can line up anywhere across the line of scrimmage.

With International Path Player Patrick Murtagh out of the picture, it looked like Deguara had a good shot of getting the nod. He didn't but he's one injury away from getting his number called. Fellow tight end Shawn Bowman signed with the Jags after going undrafted earlier this year.

Tre Flowers, for his part, gives the Jaguars a depth piece in case injuries deplete their cornerback room. While the veteran has ample experience, it's possible that the coaching staff wanted to see what other young players could do.

Linebacker Tanner Muse, on the other hand, has carved a niche as a contributor on special teams. The former third-round pick has enjoyed somewhat of a career revival after being let go by the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

Last but not least, veteran Joe Graziano and D.J. Coleman give the Jaguars a couple depth options at defensive end. The former is a veteran with game experience while the latter has come along nicely since signing with Jacksonville as an undrafted free agent last year.
